BCI vs. BCC Temperment?

Skyfire_1 Aug 23, 2011 09:08 PM

OK, maybe you can set this Ball Python person straight. I was looking for a BCI Male over a BCC because of the size only. I always thought the two have generally the same type of disposition, where the CA granted may generally tend to be a bit nippier.

When I went to the local Reptile Store today I asked the owner if he had any Male BCI's, and he said he doesn't usually carry them because they are nasty and more aggressive than BCC’s. He was pretty adamant about it even after I questioned him about it, saying I never thought there was much difference in their temperaments.

So I know each snake has their own personality, and I am not concerned how hard it is to get a snake out of his cage, but I was just curious if in general does this seem to be true, and I just never knew it?

Thanks...

I have found male BCI, including Hog Islands, to be some of the calmest, most trustworthy, easy to handle snakes along with the females. This includes babies and juveniles through adults when properly handled. Genetics play a key role in snake calmness along with the first human interactions as a baby and proper handling/husbandry through the snake's life. A good acclimation to new surroundings is paramount. Concerning the BCC they are said to be more high strung and aggressive than BCI with more demanding and exact husbandry. Again, back to proper care and handling. I currently have pairs of Suriname BCC and Peruvian BCC that I can just reach in the cage and pick up. Each snake is an individual and you might find that one that won't calm down, but as a rule BCI males are usually calm snakes. Sounds like that shop keeper wants to sell only what he currently has in stock. Bill

Maybe he is referring to wild caught BCI?

Or Central Americans, otherwise he is just trying to make a sale.

I'm always surprised by just how calm and relaxed BCI are as
neonates. I had 4 litters this year and none of the little
wigglers has even hissed at me.
