Snakes Doing Well

paulw156 Aug 24, 2011 04:42 PM

Hi, not posted anything for a while.

My Kings are doing well. Both gone through shedding... Each snake was very quite and inactive during the first stages. Then blue eyes. Then a few days later shedding. All ok.

Im feeding them fuzzies... the female one or two every 4 to 6 days and the male 2 to 3 fuzzies every three days. The male is skinny and the female is a good size (much bigger).

My question is...

My snakes are now (as they were when i brought them) the same size as one width and one length of my box.

At what stage (or length) is best to move them to another bigger box.

I do know that a larger box can be over whelming for them but no books have told me at what size my snakes should be when I make there home bigger.

Hope you are all ok.

Im not sure where that came from: "a cage too big can be overwhelming"... Look where these snakes come from.. no glass or plastic walls keeping them in or keeping food in or out. If you only have the 2 snakes and room is not an issue, i say bigger is better. I do not think a snake can be overwhelmed by too much space.(I dont think a snake has ever died because it had too much space to stretch out in) They do fine in the wild. Keep a good temp gradient, a few hides, including a moist hide, and a water dish clean and big enough for them to soak in and they should thrive for you.

to really emphasis your point...

if you put those snakes in a completely bare 10ft x 10ft enclosure they would probably "feel" overwhelmed, countless of thousands of years are screaming out "I'm exposed, I'm vulnerable"... those same snakes in the same room but with multiple hides, spots where they feel secure and hidden will be as "happy" as the proverbial pigs in sh!t.

To bring things back to a more realistic level... if your goal is to keep your snakes in a display type enclosure then yes... your idea of length and width of enclosure equals length of snake is a great place to start... at least IMO

Too right.
Even with things like balls, too big isn't an issue--inappropriate is. Give them hides--lots of hides. I mean, they don't need a monster cage but some space is good.

For instance, I'm planning on 4x2s for my florida kings. That should be very sufficient--but I'm also sure that they'd use a whole room sized cage, they're active snakes. I may put them in a 6x3 if I wind up with extra cause they're freaking fun

I ment that big cages/vivs with lots of space, well some books say that length of snake should equal width/length of box and that some snakes can get lost (lol).

Im only a novice and I would like to get another box for the other snake (i partitioned one box into two as both snakes were bigger than i was told lol).

I like the idea of extra hides and i would also like to place some drift wood (or whatever it is) in there for them to climb. They seem to climb all over the place at the moment! lol

I appreciate everyones help, thanks guys.
