Hatchling NC locality Ltt

Dniles Aug 25, 2011 07:43 PM

Here is a nice clutch of 11 baby McDowell county NC locality Ltt. Sex ratio was 5.6. How cool is that?

this is the male I am holding back to go with a sub adult female I have

A few pairs are going to people that are intersted in NC Ltt. it will be cool to get a line of NC Ltt going in the hobby.

Glad you're excited about it Brad. I am too. I hope you enjoy working with your hatchlings.

Very nice Dave. Looks like your hold back has some good color too. Did I see a collar in the pile?

Joe

Yep. There was one full blown collar in there! Figured collar man would see it.

Why are Ltt not generally available? Is it that they are difficult to get feeding on pinks as babies, or is it local laws? Perhaps not alot of interest? Must be some reason. I'm a West coaster, know little about those Eastern snakes. Thx.

Mark - that is a good question. I think they're great. Granted many localities are not quite as colorful as other triangulum ssp. That coupled with the babies being small and stubborn feeders may contribute to their lack of popularity in the hobby.

Those that do work with them likely enjoy the variability of this ssp from one locale to the next and even within the same locale.

Nice Dave. Wow, those things look tiny compared to the ones that hatched up here.

I tried to take some post shed pics today, but not much luck with the little buggers sitting still.

This "in hand" shot was the only one I got that was in focus.

Wow Joe those are HUGE!! What temp did you cook those eggs?

You're right those NC Ltt hatchlings are small. the eggs were slightly bigger than a peanut m&m. They are much smaller than the Montgomery county MD Ltt I hatched this year as well.

Congrats on your babies. Those look great! Are they het albino?

I did not keep them in an incubator Dave, but the temps varied from 72-80 when I checked on them. 55 days. My other clutch that was not good had much smaller and more (9)eggs, from a smaller female.

They are possibly het, or they could be from a wild male as the female was found a little over a month before laying. Time will tell.

Very nice. They don't look that much different from Mass. hatchlings. What do they start out eating? I found some hatchlings and can't imagine trying to find food for them if I kept them.

They start out eating lizard parts or mouse tails! but seriously I think they eat baby lizards are hatchling snakes in the wild.
