VPI T SNOWS!!!

creptilia Aug 26, 2011 09:14 PM

It's been a long while since I've posted here, but nonetheless, I am excited to finally see this 4 year project come to fruition. (We couldn't wait until they shed to show them off.) This VPI snow litter was the result of a Triple het x Double het breeding. What is interesting about this pairing, is how we ended up with the parents. The sire was from a poss partho litter--I was not confident he would prove out (though Kyle was)--and the dam was a female I decided to hold back last year (I realized I needed more VPI breeding stock); otherwise, we would have missed on these little gems this year. The litter was perfect in everyway: perfect odds, perfect babies, the dam was textbook, and NO SWEET POTATOES!

I was so excited to see that these little babies have as much color as they do. I would have been so dissappointed if they looked like T neg snows (I like snows, but I wanted them to have the T pos appeal). I imagine these guys will look like white ghosts as they mature, and not muddy up. I love how VPI's brighten up as they get older and still retain enough color to keep you interested. I appreciate the subleties of my visual VPI's everytime I peek in their cages.

Anyways, enjoy! (Clockwise: The top pic is of a VPI T pos, T Snow, T Sunglow, and Anery for comparison.) We'll make sure to take pics after they shed.

And, congrats to big Mike for producing the first T positive form of the anery and ghost.

I love it! Congrats! What were the odds on the litter? How many of each did you end up with?

creptilia Aug 27, 2011 01:22 PM

The odds were perfect in the sense that the results pretty much followed what was predicted. But, this is not to say the odds were in our favor. We did not hit on the VPI Ghost with its 1/32 odds; although, we got 2 snows (1/16)! She also dropped a couple VPI Sunglows and one albino. The rest were anery's, one ghost, a handful of hypos, and some normals (all 66% het for VPI).

have not decided on whether or not to bring a VPI snow. They will be in deep shed by then, so we'll see. We're not opposed to it.

Congrats Ron. That is a fantastic litter. Is this from the male that I genotyped, sibling to the ones you sent me?

The sire came from a VPI x (a different) Ghost female. The results were very similar to the triple het litter last year, which you genotyped.

I'm excited he proved out!

I need some more pics I'm going through withdrawal here...please!!!

creptilia Aug 27, 2011 01:30 PM

Sorry Tracy. I didn't take very many pictures. I was more concerned with getting everything cleaned up so I could return to hanging out with the family; not to mention, the 109 degree temp outside was making the snake room toasty. We'll get some better ones after they shed.

we're estatic over here. This is Kyle's dream boa (and I gotta say, after seeing them, mine too). I'm so glad we didn't miss on the VPI snow this season. This is the latest litter we have ever had, but it was well worth the wait. The dam was on the small side when she came back to my smalltime breeding facility, so it took a lot of feeding to get her ready for this year. In fact, whe was one of the smallest Colombian's I have ever bred. She was a trooper, and such a sweetheart when I removed her (that rarely happens).

On a somewhat related note. If any of you are biology teachers (even at the freshman college level), you may want to check out the snake breeding activities I designed for genetics instruction. I think it's pretty cool. Follow the link (you may see some of your snakes there):

Did the pairing produce any ghosts, or t moonglows?
I like it, but would have expected it to be super washed out, is possibly just a ghost het t ?

creptilia Sep 01, 2011 11:27 PM

There was one ghost...no VPI Ghosts. You have to see them all together. There is a stark contrast between the snows, ghost, and anerys. Personally, I'm glad they're not washed out; although, I'm confident they will lighten.
