Caught in the Act

Joe Oct 01, 2003 01:24 PM

I just walked downstairs to check on little Rusty to see if she has laid her eggs yet, and caught her right in the act. Right in the big hole she has been diggin for about a week she has her butt end backed into it and I can see a few white lumps shining behind her and she doesn't exactly look comfortable. So I left her alone and I am gonna check here in about 5 more minutes to see how she is doing then it is time to go put the eggs into the incubator. I have a nice styrafoam box ready with a cup of water in it and a small container with holes poked in the lid and filled about 1/3 up with moist bed-a-beast. Hopefully this works out cause these eggs are fathered by a CB male (Link) eventhough the mother is WC.

A quick question for Marcia. She stopped eating I believe 6 days ago, is she going to be ready to chow like a big again like she did while she was gravid? Like 2-3 nightcrawlers a day? cause if so I need to hit walmart again tonight and stock up again...LOL.

Congratulations! I would stock up on crawlers just in case. She may not want to eat today after laying. She may be too tired

I would bet that tomorrow she will eat a worm and she should gradually get back to being a pig. Expect to have more eggs on the way in case she does cary multiple clutches. Make sure she gets as much as she want as she could be laying again in 2-3 months. That's not a lot of time to plump back up so you need to give her ample food. A pink or two from time to time may be a good idea too if you can get them and if she will eat them. The problem with this is that if she doesn't eat them you can't freeze them and feed them later as she may not eat it if it doesn't move. I think Chey said she feed pre-killed pinks but I would think you would have to jiggle it for her to think its alive.

Good luck, I'll be looking for updates!

Yeah that is kinda what I figured is that she wouldn't eat quite yet but would slowly start piggin out again. I will definitely make sure she gets plenty of food from now until her next clutch and plenty of calcium too. As for the pinks, Lucky (Chey's baby) I have gotten to eat a thawed pink, and both of my armata's have eaten thawed ones. I haven't gotten any other capra's to go after pinks yet. The only problem is the place where I got the pinks went out of business My male armata ate 3 pinks in a row...he is such a pig. Anyways she looks to be getting pretty thin right now and definitely over a half a dozen eggs are sittin underneath her. Hopefully it won't be too long til she covers it up and goes to sleep.

Yeah, I always let them bury the clutch and rest before I dig it up. I have only removed the eggs before they were buried once and the mom buried the hole and packed it just the same as she would have with the eggs in it. Very interesting! So, I figure that its better to let them complete the process and pass out before I disturb things.

Yeah that is my current plan. I have another question thoug, how long does it usually take the female for the whole process from the first egg comin out to passin out? I think rusty has been at it for about an hour and a half and just looks exhausted and still a bit lumpy from what I can see. I am still worried about her I guess, not surprising though.

Congratulations Joe. I'm hoping we hit for the trifecta - and that you, Marcia, and either myself or Elizabeth will soon have eggs. In honesty, and given my past with herps, I'm not optimistic about a fertile first clutch from an animal that I've owned for less than two weeks. Having read about other folks experiences, I'm considering obtaining another female, and housing 'randy-randy' my male capra separately in a 2'x3'x2' enclosure thats currently gathering dust in the basement. (Hope it will house hatchlings some day)
Hope your girl rests up and then bellies up to the buffet table.

Regards,

Don M.

Erowens body shape just shifted, more diamond shaped, less heavy looking, but she is in her same spot, and her tank felt COLD this am when we woke up (but it was 76-83 according to the temp gun)
I took her out and got some pics

That is a tight, plump looking belly! By the way, in that pic it looks like she is sporting some nice blue on her throat. Is that true or just the pic?

And yes, I do credit the forum for helping me learn. There are still things that someone else may observe that I haven't had a chance to yet. And when Cheyanne was still working with the dragons we were constantly bouncing ideas off of each other. Now it is you and Joe and all the others who stop in that share ideas and thoughts. We're all still learning, I just happened to be one of the lucky ones to be the first to breed these guys!

The vet last ngiht LOVED your booklet, he made a point of not letting it get messed up, or lost
he said as long as he is a vet worth going to he will not be offended having someone tell him somthing NEW, OR if I ever get a second opinion.
he was VERY interested in the packet of pages I gave him all stapled up together, with the sexing stuff at the back of the LONG caresheet)
he may look you up, his name is Guillford (I think)

I find that the good vets never stop learning and the really good ones are willing to learn from the pet owners who come in. I had 2 vets in Omaha that learned with me when it came to the dragons. They knew basic lizard stuff but not temps, habitat, etc. I think that makes for a great patient/vet relationship.
