Small Litter

Jeff Clark Aug 29, 2011 10:27 AM

I did not get into the snake room until 8 this morning. I found that one of my Peruvian locale snakes had laid a small litter with 7 live, 1 stillborn and 4 slugs. The babies are healthy and have nice bright crescents like both of their parents. First two photos show mom with the litter. Photos of mom with the litter in the nest box were staged. Most of the babies and mom were already out of the nest box where the litter had been laid when I found them. Third photo shows the father of the litter.

Congrats on the litter, Jeff. One day I will get one of these guys from you, I think the Peruvian locale's are my favorite mainland rainbow.

All 7 ate live pinky rats today. I am not sure why but some litters are born with fat bellies like they have just eaten. It is probably the last of the yolk material that gets absorbed over the last few days of gestation. Other litters like this one the babies look like they are born with empty bellies. The thinner ones seems to alsways eat just as soon as you offer them something.

Seen the same over the years and am totally convinced the larger bellies are the remaining yolk and those babies are not hungry as soon as the thinner ones.

Not always but they also seem to take a day or two longer to shed.
