Well pet shops all over the us should be loving the fact they are probably sold out of all their snakes and getting ready to reorder more to keep up with the demand of all the stupid people that think that a snake can be an accessory. Last night justin beaver/ biebar/ biber whatever the hell his name is had a snake on his wrist like a bracelet during the mtv music video awards. I can only imagine all the jersey shore watching morons that are running to follow whatever this idiot does.

"This is my snake, his name is Johnson."

Mature kid, definitely what people should idolize and obsess over lol.

I just hope all the nut-jobs that went with this little "Do it because he's Bieber" fad take care of their new little buddies.

We need more mainstream exposure to push snake keeping to a greater level of acceptance. Not a fan of the kid but it's better than a bunch of celebrities pushing the PETA agenda.

as much as i hate that tool beiber, you have a point. as long as the new owners that jump on the beiber does it bandwagon actually take care of their snakes it is a good thing

The funny thing is I wouldn't be surprised if he's also a member of peta...celebrities are not that smart.

JLballs Aug 30, 2011 05:44 AM

as long as people do there research and actually want to get them that its all cool, my fear is that there is going to be a bunch of...how to put it nicely...stupid kids... i guess thats as nice as it gets. That dont do there home work and say "hey bieber has a boa and see how small it is that is all the bigger they get" and then talk there ignorant parents into buying them one and then here they have a 7 foot snake in a few years that they are probably not going to want and then start letting loose and then yet another bad rep for the hobby.

he normalized it. that's a good thing. his girlfriend was not afraid of it. thats a good thing.

he's a tool for using a living thing as a design accessory - like paris hilton and her little dogs - but in the long run, making something the press loves to make into a shocking thing not look shocking is great. plus he's 17 - i think i did crap like that when i was 14 or so too.

yes, idiots that wont care for them correctly, will go out and buy snakes - but some of them will care well for them well, and the hobby grows, and becomes further normalized.

snakes are sold every day in petshops, long before bieber and long after bieber, to people that will not care well for them. dogs, cats, horses, etc. all kept animals are at the whims of people, some caring - some uncaring. that is the ugly side of animal ownership. since the beginning of time.

Wether or not anyone actually EDUCATES people about snakes or just complains on here about the lack of knowledge that "stupid kids" have? Weren't we ALL stupid kids once? Is this becoming an elitest hobby? Or is it filling up with lazy whiners? Maybe someone COULD email beiber a care sheet? MAYBE... just MAYBE voice their concerns about the message he is sending with his great new herp pet and what he could do to help educate young people?

Sounds like its up to me...

i dont find it anyone elses responsibility to educate someone on an animal that THEY buy besides themselves, if THEY are interested in owning and caring for the animal then THEY should do the homework, the stupid kids are going to be the ones that buy it just because someone famous has one just to follow along, im all game for him having a snake and supporting the hobby, IF that is what he is doing. And i dont find a complaint anywhere in my post, nor a "lazy whiner" remark, just my own concern about the hobby that i enjoy. Im not a big time breeder nor do i plan to be but i would like to legally own reptiles as long as i can before they start passing more and more laws that make them illegal because of things like florida and their "giant killer snakes" being all the boas and berms they are finding in the wild from people releasing them, i just dont want to have this happening more and more across the u.s. Thats just my concern but if SOMEONE wants to educate them after buying the snakes go right ahead.

Really? now I'm an elitist and a lazy whiner because i can see whats going to happen? Its now my job to go "o someone thinks a snake would be a great accessory and a pun in his jokes for the night its my job to educate him." F that, its not my job, but you go right ahead and e mail him, let me know how that works out for you. What even makes you think that the snake is still alive? All the limos i have been in don't have a very good basking area.
I can look at this with experience, I'm not just someone who dislikes the kid. Lets go ask all those clownfish owners that rushed out after seeing "finding Nemo" lets see how that worked out.
I might have been a stupid kid once, but i was running around in the hills building forts and looking for snakes, i was never wearing skinny jeans and cutting my hair just the way my idol did. I had a real hero, my grandpa, a mans man, a proud veteran! not the POS non talented people that we make famous for not doing a damn thing.
I think that the "cool" science teacher with all the snakes in middle school does a hell of a lot more for our hobby than this one kids publicity stunt ever will! if that makes me an elitist lazy whiner, then so be it. I don't think that watching 1000 snakes die to pick up 5 good snake keepers is worth it.

Both of you reiterated my point and some of what's wrong with americans these days "its not my problem" its not huh? Keep telling yourself that when you hear the stories of "giant killer snakes"...

Yea education of the uneducated is deffinatley not your guys problem... I'm sure other breeders and herpers will do it for you guys and our hobby! ... oh wait... its not their problem either... is it? So the snake just gets tortured and its no ones problem in your mind, where does it end? Where will this hobby be if its no ones problem in 5 years..

Let me spell it out for you... EDUCATION prevents the non hobbiest from beleiving the lies about the "man eating snakes" in florida. It teaches those who will be next to us to fight the next bill like 669. ABOVE all it helps to ensure proper care of a living being that can't raise its tail and say "HEY, I haven't basked in 4 days in this limo, I need to bask daily to stay healthy"!

But then again its not YOUR problem, is it?

I agree.

Hes not the first or last celeb to use a snake as an accessory - when its a heavy metal rocker we think it's cool and a great source of exposure - lets call them up next time we have a bill to fight - when its a teen nerd it's an irresponsible bad message?

My first snake went everywhere with me - I was a preteen snake weirdo - been there done that.
