Dave, here is a public thanks for the western fence lizards I received from you today. I have already gotten one of my non-feeders to eat a scented pinky. Something about fence lizards must taste very different from anoles!!

Here is an old shot of the proud mom.

ROFL. Scelops are actually really neat. I just don't feel the need to keep an animal I can find hundreds of in the field every season...but they're FUN to watch (I can entertain myself well watching them do thier thing)

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

My next reptile acquisition is going to be some emerald swifts. They give live birth. Creating a suitable habitat will be more effort than what I have for my hardy fencies, but I think I can keep them warm enough in the winter.

That was great news that one of your babies took a scented pink. glad I was able to help...I know that one of those guys was pretty fat, was wondering if possibly gravid? Thats all you need now is lizard eggs! Any other lizard questions, I'll refer you to Bob(pyromaniac), as he is the forum expert on those guys! They are cool to look at, very pretty. Good luck Kent...Dave.

Female

Male

Diagram

Males always have the pair of enlarged postanal scales. Females never have these enlarged postanal scales. Even tiny hatchlings can be identified by the presence or not of these scales.

I did this post a ways down on the page but am repeating it up here so you all don't miss it. There are other subtle differences between the males and females; for instance the males will have some blue flecks on their backs but the females never have any blue flecks on their backs. But the postanal scale thing is the gold standard.
