KingDome Sep 01, 2011 09:57 AM

Caught this 5 foot black racer in my back yard about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Have been letting him slide through my hands daily in his/her cage and I finally got it out yesterday. He/she did great. Never struck at me once. I have a video but my u-tube account is messed up. I know y'all only want to see kings on this forum but can you fell my excitement. Thought that was pretty cool so I shared.

Sorry bad picture (cell phone)

Very cool. Has it been eating well for you?

I like the Cal. king x turtle hybrid too. I hear those can become genuine after about 2 generations of back-breedings....(sarcasm)..

I tried feeding it different size frozen/thawed mice. By tweezers and by just leaving it in. No success.
I tried feeding it a medium size live mice,(not fully grown). No success

I was able to get it to eat three live pinkies over a period of a couple of days. The mice just got a good solid coat of hair on them. He would eat them over night.

If it will only eat the smaller portions, How often should I feed that size snake?

Yea it will be interesting watching him shed his shell, cause he is about to out grow it.

Many snakes can be like that and would rather accept smaller, more helpless prey. I would offer it a small pile of very large chubby rat pups or mice around every 5 to 6 days and see if it consumes enough of them at a time to do well. I had a captive import Mandarin Ratsnake that chose to eat like this too just as one example of this. It would never in all the years I owned it eat an adult rodent that could walk around and defend itself, but it would devour a pile of helpless rodents left in the corner of the cage with gusto!

Also, Racers love to consume brown anoles in the wild too, but the rodents are probably the better choice anyway if they are accepted.

Racers do not constrict so you can't blame them for not wanting to take a mouse that can fight back. I have kept them as a kid, and they love lizards, as Doug said, but if they take the smaller fuzzies, they may eventually get used to it and start taking larger ones as their fear subsides. I have seen Racers eat live mice, though so it is possible. It's incredible to watch as they eat it live, but I wouldn't do that today. I was a dumb kid, when I did it, lol.

Thanks a153fish.

Yea I will try some differant things. If it turns out to be to hard to maintain I will just let it go in the back yard. I don't want to be detrimental to it's heath and put it's life in danger.

Thanks guys

That's funny! You should try to breed their arms back. It would really help with swimming. Haha!

Well, like many of us know, when you start messing with Genetic polymorphism, you never know what you are going to get. But in this case it is more like Transient polymorphism to the extreme. lol
