roaches

lele Oct 01, 2003 03:15 PM

I looked for the old roach thread but couldn't find it. I got a bunch of baby hissers (I think) and some medium size. The bigger ones are too large for luna - she spit it out - and the babies are probably too small. I'd like to feed the babies to my gecks and anoles, but they climb. I was going to put something around the edge so they can't get out (used double-sided tape in their tank which works great!) but wonder what happens if the gecko or anole foot gets stuck to it? Are you all laughing at me now? Was that a stupid question?

Any roach feeding advice appreciated. Btw, the screens on anole and gecko tanks ar 1/8" so I can't let them free roam, plus there are just too many hiding spots. Thanks!

my anoles and geckos dont really like roachs but mabe its just the one i have so if you want to feed then put the roachs in the fridge (not freezer) for a little bit. IT will slow them down then you can either put them in the cage with the reptiles or handle the roachs to take of their legs or something....i dont know.

you could try vasiline around the top of the tank...i also heard that ants wont cross over flour you can see if the same is true with roachs....also they cant climb wet surfaces

Yeah, Vaseiline makes a good border for roaches.... If it's vertical, they can't cross it. Just smear a thin layer like 3 inches wide around the top and they'll just kinda paw at it but won't cross. To feed them to chameleons, get a heavy bowl with about a 5-6 inch diameter and about 2 inches deep and put the vaseiline around the inside walls of the bowl. The reason I say heavy bowl is because I had a few roaches in a plastic bowl (like the ones you get chameleons in in the mail) and a panther shot at one and it's tounge stuck a little bit and the bowl flipped over. I was scrambling to catch them. I don't even like touching roaches, but I had to that time. Are you keeping roaches or just trying a few out? If any of mine get over about an inch long, I let them grow up to adult size. I need more large roaches anyways. My smaller panthers love the baby roaches though. I don't know how old yours is, but panthers in the 5-7 month range like the babies. It's a good way to control the roach population too cause they'll eat quite a few. The last thing I want is too many roaches. I need a few more, but I don't want them getting out of control..... And they do that sometimes.

For the roach house I used double sided tape. I don't use vaseline (never gave it a second thought until I needed it for this! LOL!) so the tape seemed like a good (and frankly a little bit less messy) idea and is working great!

It's the feeding to cham/geckos and anoles that I am more concerned about. I thought the babies might be too small for Luna. They are about the size of ph - 1/8" crix. Luna is used to the adults but I'll try some (Luna's is 4 months).

I just got a bunch from someone online to try out. I have plenty for now. Since Luna won't eat the bigger ones (almond size - she spit one out) I can feed them to Rose, my tarantula but sometimes she goes weeks w/o eating!

I'll just try the sticky tape on a feeding bowl. Good tip about the weight of the bowl! I'll keep that in mind!! Thanks

Ooooh I thought you were talking about Madagascar Hissers.... You must mean something else. Hissers are born about a quarter inch long and are a good size for smaller chams. What happens with the double sided tape? Do they stick to it or do they just avoid it? I never tried that one.
