2011 Santa Ana zonata pulchra . . . .

JKruse Sep 04, 2011 11:55 PM

Another neat clutch I thought I'd share that just began to pip/emerge. Love these guys. The only thing hot about them is the way they look, period. Enjoy!

Very nice, Jerry. I think Hubbs says some of the nicest ones come from those mountains. I've found a lot of different herps up there but not any zonata yet. Maybe one day if I spend enough time in their preferred habitat up there. Here's some habitat shots from 08.

And imho, I think they ARE the prettiest locale of pulchra. Beautiful photos Ross, and you're headed in the right direction with the presence of more riparian topography.

Interesting that they are hatching in September. Do you think you will get them feeding this fall or have to wait until spring to have them start feeding?

Love the little black snouts! LOL!

Thanks much.......I will offer what I can (live, thawed, scented, etc.) with what small window of opportunity I have. We can't override their internal clocks/instincts. Usually by the beginning of November if there's no feeding response, or sometimes a meal or two may be taken with a subsequent shut-down (internal trigger to prepare for brumation), I place the babies into the cold and try again after brumation is over. Usually the feeding response is better at that point, but with zonata nothing is written in stone.
