Eastern Milksnake / Rare Pattern?

granddl Sep 05, 2011 09:53 AM

Here is what I consider to be a pretty and rare Eastern Milksnake...at least that's what it appears to me be with the low resolution cell phone pic that my brother-in-law sent me.

He lives where I grew up in Southeast Michigan about an hour north of Detroit. I have only come across these handsome snakes once the entire time I lived in MI. Any second oppinions on the ID? He was under the impression that it was a massassauga rattler, but I was able to quickly convince him that it was definitely not and actually appeared to be a pretty rare find. Is this a semi-common pattern for Eastern Milks...I have not seen enough to know. Anyways I thought it was cool enough to share. Enjoy. I will try to get some more pics from him

You obviously need a better photo, as it is impossible to ID the snake from that one. Knowing the snake's size would be helpful. There have been a few strange morphs of wild E. Milks that have popped up over the years, it's quite possible that's what the snake is.

Well, unless it is someone's ridiculous hybrid project, that is DEFFINITELY a VERY aberrant patterned "something"..LOL!

Closer, more detailed photos will certainly be needed for proper ID though as to exactly what it truly is. However from what little I can make out there, it does "seem" to be a newly-hatched Eastern milksnake.

I'd love to see some more pics of that one. I don't believe it is a "semi-common" pattern at all if it is an eastern milk (and from that pic and location I'd believe that it is an eastern).

Hi. Thanks for posting the picture.
Whatever happened to the snake in the photo? I'm hoping that your relative didn't kill it. Especially since he thought it may be a massassauga.
If that is an Eastern Milk snake, that is an incredible pattern aberrancy. As mentioned by others in this post, it would certainly be helpful if you could somehow get some better pics, or at least some pictures that are closer to the snake.

Rest assured I was able to convince him that it was a harmless snake before any damage was done. The little fella is now safe in a little plastic terrarium. He didn't take a pinkie yet, but maybe in a few more days... I explained to him that it was a very rare gem and should be treated as such. I will need to get my hands on it, sex it(hopefully it is a male), and then go shopping for some clean red mates to attempt to reproduce this morph. I will post some better pics as soon as I get them.

That is awesome that you will be getting it in hopes of some future propagation. I would definitely do WHATEVER it took to keep that thing alive and well until it fed voluntarily..LOL!

Best of luck with it, and we all look REAL forward to more pics!..

Ok, I finally got a couple more semi-decent pics of the unusual milk. I'll post better ones once I get him in my possession.

Wow. That's an awesome looking aberrant pattern. Sure does look like an Eastern Milk too. You definitely have something unusual there.
Thanks for posting the pics. And keep them coming once you get that snake in your posession.
If you ever get tired of keeping that milk, don't hesitate to contact me (BLB1029@cs.com). Jorge has enough snakes already..........

Just got the little guy. It has a little deformity to its tail, but should be good breeder still. Now I need to get it started on pinks...or at least parts of pinks...pretty small still.
