Pastel Pied or Pied??? Need Opinions.

reidbeg Sep 05, 2011 01:42 PM

Need an expert opinion here. I didn't hatch this guy out, but just traded a good friend for him.

He has not gone through his first shed yet.

Just need an expert opinion on whether or not this is a pastel pied.

I have other pictures, if you need more to determine, I can email them to whomever.

Thanks for looking.

Does someone mind taking the time to explain EXACTLY what you are looking for in a Pastel Pied? Thanks!

The head on a pastel has much more blushing... Pastel pieds also have that head blushing. That pied has the head of a normal. No doubt regular pied. Ask 100 people that know what they are looking at and you will get the sane answer 100 times...

would'nt the eyes be a give away also?

Your snake has none of the tell-tale head blushing which would indicate a Pastel Pied. Don't take our word for it-Google "Pastel Pied" and look at the images yourself.

My opinion: Not a Pastel. Nice, bright Pied.
It's actually easiest to pick out a Pastel Pied right out of the egg. To me, it's like they have a gray wash over much of their pattern. That effect becomes less obvious as they mature. Here is a Pastel Pied right out of the egg:

Here is the same snake at about 1 year of age:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the responses. It has been helpful. I have heard that it can varry quite a bit. I saw the sibling of this snake and she was neon yellow and black right out of the egg, but does not have the head markings that most have.

This snake sitting next to all of the pieds I hatched out this year (around 15) just doesn't compare. I am anxious to see what it looks like after its first shed, and I might re-post some pics and guage a response then as well.

Again, thanks for all of the input, it is much appreciated.
