Need info about american toad

May 26, 2003 10:44 PM

Hi,

I just love american toad and I decided to keep one as pet this summer. So, I need to find a caresheet about this species. I want to know everything: feeding, housing, substrate, temp, humidity, etc.

Could you tell me where I could find a good caresheet for this species (that could be a web site or even a book)?

Thanks!
Annie

american toads are really easy and interesting to keep. i have one 3-inch-long toad in a 10 gallon tank. I use soil for a substrte, a few inches because my toad will bury itself often. As long as soil is pesticide and fertilizer free. Coconut fiber is also a great choice, comes in a brick and you add water to it, but I had trouble getting plants to grow in it.
You can get really creative with live plants in a toad tank, they like the shade and hiding-spots that plants offer. all this and a waater bowl changed daily, as well as a secure tank lid (toads can climb higher than you would think!)

Thanks for the info. I hope I'll do everything right.

But, a 10 gallons tank is it enough for a 3 inchs toad? I think this is small. I used to keep turtles, so, I know turtles and tortois need a lot of space and I though that was the same thing for toad (I could be wrong of course. I'm a newbie after all).

All advice are welcome!

Thanks again!

I started him off in a 10 gallon but he was scrabbling at the glass all the time. In the 20 gallon, he seems a lot happier. & I'll go larger for him, when we move!

If you're going to bring a toad in from outside, you probably can't go 'too large' for floor space, so if you've got the room, a bigger tank allows you to have more fun planting a terrarium anyway, if you want to go that route!

They do like low, cozy hidey-spots, so of you put in some cork bark or similar, he'll prolly hollow out a nice den underneath it; ditto for ivy or whatever else you may plant. (it always seems to me that those 'toad houses' you see in garden catalogs are too tall, at least according to what the toads with whom I'm acquainted prefer...really, I don't think they care for cathedral ceilings!

I had some gulf coast toads and they are awesme toads. I would have to say they are by far my favorites.I do agree to some extent that they would be happer in a 20 long. I soon found out that The gulf coast toad is much more active than my american toad was or ever would of been. Gulf coast, again this is what I saw from my own three I had, two gulf's and one american, do not burrow much and hunt longer periods of the day and night. I noticed that they were first out at night walkin and climbing around and last to go to sleep. The biggest thing that impressed me was that the gulf coast toads are AWESome CLIMBERS. I also love how they lay down on there bellows like a dog or cat would.

Depending on where you live its easy to take care of them no temp other tahn room tempature. if its under 3" its ok in a medium kritter cage or a 10g-5g Tank. Ive ketp may ing 10g buckets because that can't hop out. To feed them just , yet againg the apropraite size, grasshoppers, crickets, earthworms, and pretty much anything that you found outside near them. You are getting him outside, right? I have 2 newts and i add earthworms in a dish and i have live plants and it seems to bring in bugs. Thats all the info i have.Any other questions, just ask.

ginevive I totaly agree with them climbing. I just recently had an american that jump clear outta my 20 long (which I did not have a top on) fell down on the floor and jumped up in one of my plants I had in the living room. Total shock to me, and to top it off my cat plaid with it and I guess tried to bite the toad and got a nasty taste in her mouth and threw up. Toads are such amazing creatures, I give them all the respect in the world. I never thaught that this american could jump that high because I have an american before and it was a goofball. It could not jump high at all and was a horrable climber. I for now will never underestamate the american toad anymore::LOL
