Reproduction prickly pear cactus pads...

Kerby... Sep 08, 2011 02:02 PM

Same concept as the rocks. I use a rubber latex molding material and brush on numerous thin coats. Then cut out the cactus, use car wax as a mold release, mix and pour bondo/fiberglass resin....pop out the cactus cast, rinse in HOT water and then paint. Of course with my taxidermy mounts I am gluing the cactus spines back in, for your snakes you can skip that part.

Thanks, I make reproductions of a lot of things, fish, reptiles, animal parts, human hands (to hold fish in), rocks, cactus, animal jaw sets, dry lake bed, etc...

Here is a reproduction Cuban Rock Iguana that I did for the 2009 World Taxidermy Championships....made the rock base as well.

My thought process.

When I first saw you first post, I thought, isn't that a lot of work for a snake habitat. (good looking habitat)

But then WOW, Holy Cannolli, That is not (like myself) artsy fartsy stuff. That is some TOP OF THE LINE Hyperrealism. Very professional my friend.

Artsy Fartsy: Trying too hard to be artistic; an overly strong interest in appearing to be aesthetically aware.

Hyperrealism: Describes a life like rendering of people, landscapes, and scenes.

Your Taxidermy looks like a combination of artistry, craftsmanship and ingenuity. Nice work Kerby!

Thanks, one of my projects for the 2013 World Taxidermy Championships is a Re-creation of a Giant Salamander (5-6 footer). I will carve the body out of dense foam and I will be using catfish skin for the skin. Apoxy work on the seams and then paint. That should be an easy project! LOL
