Hondo folks - my hypo tricolors and a ?

ShadyLady Sep 09, 2011 09:39 PM

Here are some pics taken today of my pair of hypo tricolor hondos. They are '09s and were smaller than my '10 cal kings when I got them about a year ago. They came from different sellers. Note the difference in the head colors and patterns. My feelings won't be hurt if you tell me they are cross breeds / hybrids / etc. What do you think?

just "hobby Hondos"?

In my opinion all Hondurans in the market place (with very few exceptions that I know of) are a mix of central American milk snakes. I'll let Doug tell you the exactly sub-species,

However, Hondos have tons of variation in all the colors, including the black bands.

I don't see anything out of the norm for typical run-of-the-mill Hondos.

My two cents...and nice looking tricolors.

Thanks,
Rusty

LOL! Thanks, Rusty. I just know someone will have something to say about the difference in their head colors and patterns. So I thought I'd let them know it's okay to say so.

Hey, those of yours are beauts. I'm wondering at about what age do they start to darken up?

just because someone has an opinion, doesn't make them correct!

Too many folks think they have everything all figured out.

Head color difference to the other colors has nothing to do with hybrids, it's just an interesting Hondo variation (in my opinion).

Tricolors in my experience are always darker (within the same clutch) when compared to their Tangerine kin. In addition to that, I've observed that the males are lighter hypos than their female sisters.

I can almost tell you what the sex of the snakes are going to be when they all hatch out, again, within a single clutch.

To finally answer your question, tricolors darken up (along with most other "hypos" in a gradual process and it is very case specific (hard to generalize for the entire group; Hondos).

When you get a neonate, it is difficult to know what they will look like as adults. It's always a good thing to get pictures of the parents, but nothing is certain.

Lastly, both of those tricolors I pictured are RIP. Sad story, but I lost many prized Hondos a few years ago and I've been building up my collection very slowly, primarily focusing on the Mega Hypo line.

Hope I could help out...thanks,

Rusty

Here's that picture again...the larger tricolor on the left hand side of the picture is the female.

The second picture is of her as a neonate, about 4 weeks old. You can see when she was young, she was purple!

There are a lot of opinionated folks on these forums. That's what makes things interesting, unless its a 'fight' like on the kingsnake forum, LOL!

I'm real sorry to hear you lost your snakes. I wish mine were big enough to breed next year, I want to see what they might produce other than tri-colors.

THanks for your answers.

I agree with Rusty. They are both very nice and typical of hobby hondos. I especially like your female with her reduced black bands. Hope you get some nice babies from them.

I like it!

I good example of head color and banding color difference.

You may want to call it a quadcolor!

Thanks, Dennis. I'm looking forward to seeing what they produce. Wow, that snake is peach colored!
