Citrus Kingsnakes

"Citrus kingsnake" sounds like some sort of flashy orange and yellow color morph.

What I'm talking about here though are the "peninsula intergrade" kings from Citrus County, FL. In general, kings are not easy to come by in this locality, though there are definitely other localities that pose more of a challenge.

Back on my March 2010 herping trip, I found this young adult female king under a board in Citrus County. She has a very typical Florida king pattern, but lacks any speckling.

I revisited Citrus County again in the spring of 2011 in hopes of catching a male. I didn't end up finding much of anything.

This past August, while down in Florida for the Daytona show, I felt like I had a good chance of cruising a king. On the one rainless night of my trip I drove up to Citrus County to night cruise. The only snake of the night was this large hatchling size male kingsnake, seen crossing a short road:

He has already proven to be a great feeder, and should reach adult size in no time. While not the flashiest of locales, I do look forward to breeding these in 2013 and seeing what sort of variations are produced.

Those are really cool looking just the way they are. A pair of wc locality kings is a rare thing now days. Nice finds!

Very nice Nick. Man, you got lucky on that road cruise. Well, not all luck, you have to know where and when to cruise. Looking forward to seeing the offspring.

I really like that female. That's the first Florida King I've seen that didn't have all the speckling, yet still looked like a Florida, and not an Estern King. Hopefully that little male will look similar. Great find Nick. You make me want to go hunting again! It's been a long time.
