New Honduran - Need Help with ID

SlytherLyn Sep 13, 2011 10:22 AM

I received my new baby Honduran this morning and they didn't ship me the right one.

The first picture is the snake I was supposed to get. This was the exact snake I ordered. Wasn't one of those where they just post an example of one and say you'll get something similar. This is the one they were supposed to ship.

The second picture is the snake I received.

Definitely not the same snake. See how the 6th band on the snake in the first picture only goes half way across? The 6th band on the one I got goes all the way across. It's the band right under her head so hard to see in the photo but it's definitely a full band, not a half band. I know color can change over time but the pattern shouldn't and the one I got absolutely has a different pattern.

My question is, does the one I received look to be a Tangerine Albino? She doesn't have as much abberancy as the one I ordered but has a little at least, and I prefer the wider bands over the thinner ones so I kind of like her better than the one I was supposed to get as long as she's really a Tangerine Albino. I still am not totally clear on the differences between the different kinds of Albinos as I'm new to Hondurans.

I am going to go back to them and let them know they pulled the wrong baby, but just wanted to check with you guys first to see if I at least got the right morph. If she looks like a Tangerine Albino to you guys then I'll let is slide since I think the one I got is prettier anyways.

I can try to get a better picture if needed. She didn't want to sit still long. The orange bands in between the white ones are just a shade lighter orange than the more wider stretches of orange, if that makes sense...

I didn't realize Honduran babies were this big. I was expecting her to be half this size. She's HUGE compared to my 2011 Corn babies. She's 30 grams and 19 inches long. Hopefully that means she's a good eater

The "NEW" snake is more bi-colored than the one you were supposed to get, which is nice.

I have had MANY snakes sent to me that were NOT the correct one...not sure why. If you say that you dont want it, they will probably tell you to keep it anyway and send you the correct one. Not too cool for the breeder, but they should know better.

Yeah, if there was an agreement for them to send out a very specific snake you picked out, and they sent you something else, that would really piss me off. But!, I will say that you got a very nice amel bi-colored tangerine there. And yes, there is a VERY substantial variation among amel Hondurans, as well as the other morphs and normals of the subspecies.

When they were first introduced into the hobby by "BHB Enterprises", the only amels available were tricolored phenotypes at $3,000 dollars(like 1995). These were typically red, very light butter-yellow, and white from the amel gene. As time progressed and more were bred, more and more of the tangerine influence was introduced into these tricolor albinos from more breeders that acquired these, and the rings(especially the middle triad ring) began to go from light butter-yellow, to a more peach color, then got even more intense orange-tangerine(as well as the red body rings). These more tangerine snakes where more in demand and fetched a higher price as well as they became the "latest thing" with the amel Hondos. And here we are today with any and ALL of these different phenotypes out there now. They are probably best categorized as tricolor, then intermediate (peach phase), tangerine, bicolored tangerine, and bicolored red phases.

Now if you like this other one you got instead, which would certainly be very understandable, You should keep it, and it looks great to me. It's all a personal preference. I would still tell this breeder/dealer that he/she really screwed up by sending you the WRONG snake that you agreed upon, but if you like it, which is very understandable, then tell the person they got very lucky that you are pleased with this one. Is it at least the right sex you wanted?

Here are a few different amel variations as well.......

WOW - I want that one and that one and that one and that one.... I can see these could get very addicting. As much as I liked the high white ones in the other postings, I think I like the lower white ones even better.

I'll let them know they shipped the wrong snake, so they know, but I like the one I got so am ok with it.

I tried popping her and she didn't pop as a male. I'll probe her after she has a chance to settle in. If she turns out to be a he that would be a totally different story as I don't need another male. Thankfully I only paid $40 plus shipping for her. But that was because I had $35 credit with them because they messed up on my previous order. I don't think I'll be getting any more snakes from them. At least this mixup worked in my favor as I like the one I got better than the one I was supposed to get... as long as she's a she...

Yes, I agree..LOL!. As long as you got the correct sex, I would be real happy with that one too Lyn.

I also agree that the business has a pretty poor track record for getting their orders right..LOL!. I'm with you, I don't think I would keep doing more business with them either.

Have fun with it!. Now all you need is a bunch of other Hondo morphs like killer extreme hypos, ultra-light hypos, ghosts, pin-banded hypos, snows, and so on..HAHA!!

Don't forget plain old hondos Doug... 'cause you know imo they just can't be beat.

Even though those little red eyed devils aren't my thing... your pictures 007-1 and 0012-2 are fine looking animals, like the colors a lot!
