I really dislike winter.......updates and info

RedQuake Oct 01, 2003 06:45 PM

Hi all,

It looks like it'll be an early winter up here in Southern Ontario. The temps have dropped dramatically in the last few days.

My geckos tanks are being kept at 88 degrees at ground level by the UTH's however the air temp on the cool side has dropped into the high 60's, low 70's. The room has a chill in the air so tomorrow my brothers and i are moving all of my furniture around so that i can install a baseboard heater again (we took it out when we renovated the room putting in new baseboards and painting). I've set up lamps to raise the temps a bit.

I'm really concerned about the coming winter and the possibility of losing power. Being in the lower part of the house, the fire place doesn't heat down here so i've come up with a few ideas. I have 10 and 15 gallon tanks that all the geckos can be moved into then moved upstairs, or i can build my new unit with doors and insulated so that it'll retain the heat better. The only problem with moving them upstairs is that the temps can reach in the 90's so i'd worry they would overheat. If you have any other ideas, please feel free to throw them my way

I'm happy to report that Bronx has come around. He's getting more active and eating alot better. I've ordered 5000 mealworms and some butterworms to try out. My first online ordering, i feel so impressed with myself LOL. I finally got some pics developed and i'm exicted to show off my guys. I will do that as soon as i get everything moved around and can find the pics LOL The pneumonia isn't getting any better yet...hopefully soon. I'm pretty sure the geckos know something is up cause i'm up most of the night coughing and Dot, more than the others, usually is at the glass looking at me.

I'll be back hopefully tomorrow night or Friday

the temps really have dropped. Instead of going from summer to fall to winter, it ended up going from summer to winter, AHHH! it's freezing! *shivers* lol. Good to hear Bronx is coming around. You have pneumonia?!... Thats gotta suck. I hope ya feel better! . I'm kinda worried about the heating of my geckos. They're constantly on the warm end of the tank now the temps on the cool end are around high 60's-70.

Hi, Thankyou

I feel better about stocking up on the heat packs now but the thought of snow covering everything just depresses me. It would be fine if i didn't have to drive in it LOL. Ya have pneumonia, it all started out as a head cold then a week later it became painful to breathe. I already had a doc appointment for the results of some other tests so i had him check out my lungs. I'm now on an inhailer and antibiotics.

For the temps being so low i'm surprised at how active all my guys are. Most of them have been out and about all day, probably trying to figure out what i'm thinking, as i move things out of the room

Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day, moving all of this stuff around hehehe. I used to move things around about every 2-3 months for a change, but now i have so many large units its hard to do on my own. I've arranged for the geckos to go into my brothers room until this is done and they will be the first moved. Once its all done i'm going to spend the rest of the day in bed WOOHOO hehehe.

If the power goes out for a long time, just stick an activated heat pack in the enclosure and wrap it in some cloth. Instant heat. You can get them to last up to 60 hours.

If you can use 30, you can get 30 60-hour packs for $30 here...$1 each. They are also used for shipping geckos.

That's cute that your leos are keeping an eye out for you.

Moving tanks is exhausting work. I just realized earlier today that whenever I decide to move out of my parents' house, I am going to have a lot of trouble lugging around my tanks. I will probably have a lot more by then, too.

Thankyou, i am only having trouble breathing at night now so its starting to get better.

I have the same dilema, i live with my parents, brothers and grandmother right now. Moving out will be one HUGE job to do as i have stuff everywhere lol. I'm also located in the lower section of the house, one level up from the basement. Note: When i do have money for a house i'm buying a bungalow, i'm so sick of stairs LOL. Lugging the tanks while empty down here was a pain. I imagine i'll be worse when i go to move. Its funny though, i have no plans to move any time soon but i've already thought of how i would do it. Most likely set up all of my 10 gallon tanks at the new house, package up the geckos and take them over, then transport all of their tanks. I know it'll be alot of work but i can't wait for that day

As for today, i'm just rearranging things to make my space more accessable, but it'll still be alot of work.

If all goes well i'll be back online tonight
