Freedom Breeders for HO IS. Boas

Tony D Sep 14, 2011 11:15 AM

I'm contemplating expanding the collection to include a few boids. One I'm strongly considering is the Hogg Island boa. I've read that they bennefit from some room to climb but was wondering if any here have had luck keeping and breeding them in freedom breeder rack which lack height? Any incites appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have used the freedom breeder for larger boas but they don't support the weight very well. They bind and are not very smooth when opening or closing them with a good size boa in them.
I have had much better luck in the 6 foot RBI cages or the eight foot boaphiles.

I am sure you could breed them in a freedom breeder but if your planning on only having a few boas I would get a Sentec cage as they offer huge floor space and can get them up to 22.5 in high so you would have plenty of room for height and the length can be between 3 ft and 8ft with depth of 24 to 30 inches with plenty of height!

I have a few hogs and was lucky enough to have a litter of hypo hogs this year from a female hog bred by a hypo harlequin and I housed her in a normal size tub for smaller adult boas - 8 inches of head room - during her breeding - so they can be kept in normal sized boa enclosures. But I have also heard that hogs are naturally more inclined to be aboreal boas in the wild, so I think they would enjoy the additional height and something to climb on if you deciced to provide that. my adult female hog that bred for me this year is 4.5 yrs old and about 5 ft long.

that's my 2 cents.

good luck..... Patrick
