New(ish) to Boas

Kilowea Sep 14, 2011 08:21 PM

Hello all

Recently returned to these forums after a couple year break, life gets hectic for us all sometimes. I raised and bred corn snakes for 6 years and have owned reptiles all my life and I couldn't imagine life without them!

I got my red tail last year and having never owned a boa before I couldn't be happier. We got off to a rough start, bought her as a yearling from someone here on kingsnake and when she arrived she had mites. We worked through it but it took several months for her to completely recover, thankfully her appetite was never affected or else she may not have made it.

She has grown like a weed and still eats like a cow. Usually 1 jumbo rat every 7 days, is this too often? She gets restless and snappy if she goes more than that without food, to the point of pacing back and forth in the tank and tracking my dogs if they walk close enough to her tank. I have locks on her cage because my dogs are both around 5 pounds. A couple people I have talked to said she should only eat every 14 days, is this right?

Anyways, here are some picture

if you dont mind a little constructive criticism....never let your boa(or any snake for that matter) in your car. If that boa gets his/her head in a crevice under the dash, you are done! These aint cornsnakes. That being said, best of luck with your nice looking boa.

This Boa looks healthy to me so right now your feeding schedule is working. Honestly it's right at this time 18-24 months that I like to start backing the meals off.
So you could start to stretch it out a little . For instance feed her on 10 day schedule and then 7 day schedule then back to 10 day for a while 8-10 weeks.
Then start only every 10 days for a while then back it off to every two weeks.

With some Boas you just back them off without doing it this way but with Boas like yours they probably are
happier less stressed when you back it off slowly like I described.
