I love Rubers. They're the best behaved crotalids I've ever worked with. I've seen three in the wild, on three different occasions. One down near the Salton Sea, on the east side in an oasis. It was in the oasis, curled up next to the trail going through it. It had a large scar on its side. It let me take several pictures and even cooperated with me, by allowing me to slide it out from the shrubbery it was beside. After I took several photos, it decided to crawl back to its original spot, and coiled up again! SO COOL. Something I'll never forget.
My next encounter was in WW Canyon. I saw a very large one crawling across the road. He wasn't so eager to have his picture taken, but I got a few shots off anyway. And he didn't seem to mind. He was more of a hisser than a rattler. Very mild mannered snake. I contemplated keeping him but I just couldn't bring myself to. I really don't believe in collecting adults of any kind. They're better off in where they're at, doing what they do.
I'm gonna try to dig up photos of the first two.
The third one, (the pic I posted), I found just across the interstate from WW Canyon as a neonate...and I've had him ever since. He's an awesome snake. I keep him in a custom 8 sq ft terrarium (4' x 2') made of oak and plexi, with flexwatt, flourescent and incandescent lighting w/ thermostat and exellent ventilation. He has thrived, and is now close to 4'. He (next to a long term Mitcheli Pyhrrus) is probably the best crotalid I've ever had, with all things considered.
Crotalids ROCK!
