Strange Babies, Strange Results

waspinator421 Sep 19, 2011 11:19 PM

My het Hypo female finally had her litter last night. I have mixed feelings about this litter.... mix of good and bad results.

First the bad... only 6 live babies (one of which is deformed), 4 stills and 6 slugs. Much smaller litter than I was hoping for, especially with the deformed one.

The good news is that I got a ratio of 1.5 for sex (will confirm after sheds), and 4 of them are Hypo. Of the stills, I think 3 were Hypo, so very good odds there. I was also glad to see that mom ate 1.5 of the slugs, so she got some of the calories back.

Another interesting tidbit is that the babies are, well, just strange looking. A couple look normal, but most have 'different' patterning, and extreme blushing.

Well, here are the pics... sorry some of them are blurry and dark.

When I found them:

The stills:

After put in separate bin:

The deformed one has a flattened neck, almost like it got run over... not the usual deformity I see.

I just hope I can get them all to eat and thrive!

You've got some pretty wild patterns in there. Let's call this a good litter. You've got some stunning babies and the mom is healthy.

You know me, a glass half full kinda guy.....

Some babies, Several of which are hypos, "different" patterns and mom is fine = ya did good!! Yup, coulda been better but then again coulda been a whole lot worse.

Looking forward to seeing the post shed pics, I find that's when the hypos really shine. Sometimes pre-shed the hypo's and hets are very similar and harder to tell apart.

Thanks Dave... you are right... I got some neat babies, great ratios, and mom is in good shape so it is a good litter.

I was surprised at how similar some of the Hypos looked compared to the hets... post shed should tell me for sure but I'm fairly confident I know which are Hypo and which are hets.

LOL, I was in the same boat a few years back...

"I think these are hypos but they really don't look all that different from their het siblings - pre-shed."

Once they shed the difference is amazing.

First ever blush hypos? Whatever the answer they are going to be really neat looking as they get bigger. You may actually be very lucky with that litter. That dark little lump in one dead snake looks like an infected internal organ (maybe a gall bladder). If the infection? had progressed much longer it could have split the snake open and possibly killed the entire litter. Does this classify me as a glass half full or a glass half empty person?

Jeff, you are right... I didn't think about that. I thought it might have been it's heart, but I don't know much about the anatomy. I am very happy it didn't burst and do away with mom even!

Aubrey,
...You probably got it right. It is at what looks like heart location. I saw it in the fifth photo and had not noticed it in the fourth photo which shows the snake's head.
