What's your lowest "hot spot" temp?

voodoomagik Sep 20, 2011 08:13 AM

Hey, everyone!

With the great help that I got from my last post (thanks again, you guys!), I thought I might pose another question to the Forum.

What is the lowest "hot spot" temp you with which you feel comfortable for your boas?

For instance, if you keep your cages at cool side of 78 with a hot spot of 85, then 85 is your answer. If you don't use a hot spot and keep the entire room at 82 day and night, year round then 82 is your answer. If you cool your boas to 75 with no heat during the winter, then 75 is your answer. Does that make sense?

Please let me know what you think!

Thanks in advance for your responses!

I cool my boas in the winter and for a day or two just prior to warming them up, I'll completely shut off the heat and at night, open a window. Keep in mind I live in Central Florida. This cools the room down to about 68 degrees or so and during the day the room gets up to about 74 or 75.

On the flipside, during the summer, my daytime hotspot is 92-93 with ambient at 82 and my nighttime hotspot is 82 with ambient at about 79.

Just curious to know why you'd ask this sort of question. If someone answers with just a number and no explanation, it doesn't provide much info. Were you just asking to find out what the lowest high temperature people expose their boas to?

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously

Hey, Jonathon!

Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

I’m asking for exactly that reason. I’m temperature cycling this year and am trying to figure out how low I want to go. If someone answers with no explanation, it’d be fine if it was a temp used for cooling because that’s what I’m doing. Even if it’s a cooling temp for me but a normal temp for them, it would still help me.

I’m in Central Florida, too, so your information helps me quite a bit.

Thanks again, JB.

Hey Buddy !!! LOL

I also live in Central Florida, as you already know, and do not change my temps EVER. For any breeding related reason! There is no need to! Jeff Ronne told me this a few years ago and I figured if it works for him, why not for me as well??! Since all three of us ( you, myself, and Jeff) all use Boaphiles, I dont see why your snakes wouldnt breed the same mine did last year( 5 out of 6 pairs taking ).

I have three pairs together now all locking up and without dropping temps this year either( two of the males that produced last year with two new girls) and everything seems fine again.

Everyone does different stuff but I told you where my info came from and it worked for him in Montana and for myself here right by you. Good luck with your season Aaron!!

Hey, my man!

Everyone does indeed do different things. In fact, both you and JB's posts couldn't have illustrated that more clearly. I think you and he live probably less than 20 miles apart-much closer than I am to either of you-and both use the very different techniques that each of you have been generous enough to share. However, I would consider both of you successful boa breeders!

These crazy boas don't ever seem to be reading the same boa breeding books!

Again, I say "fantastic job this weekend!"

Thanks for posting and keep me updated!

Aaron,

I will admit, everyone has their own way of doing things and those ways are usually based off of what has worked for them in the past. I am wondering, a little, if you're questioning the temps of others as just info sharing or questioning your own temps and thinking of switching yours? You have produced really nice boas since before I had even met you so it seems to me that you have got your system pretty well worlked out already, brother!!!???

Unless all of your babies are coming from putting 23 pairs together and only hitting on 2-3 pairs, I would say you're right where you need to be breeding-wise!! As for info sharing... ask, I'll tell you anything dude!!! Well, except when I get a cool new boa and want to keep it a secret for a while LOL

Take care and hope all is well!!!

Thanks again, Jamess!

Well, as I am completely pro-info sharing. I'm "tweaking" my system a little. I wouldn't say I have it down. I'm doing okay but I definitely have some room for improvement. I want to increase my ratio of successful litters to litters attempted and work on less slugs and more babies.

To do this, I'm digging deep. I'm trying to combine what I did when I bred when I was younger in Dallas, TX and Memphis, TN with what I've learned recently from breeding in FL. In TX, I produced BCI and in Memphis, I produced BCI and Dumeril's boas (Acrantophis dumerili.)

This initially was going to be a post about what I did then, what I tried recently and what I was planning to try in the next couple of seasons. However,I quickly realized that it was going to be very long and very, very very boooooooooooring and I didn’t want to subject the entire forum to my idiotic ramblings so I’ll wrap it up here and say, “thanks again for posting, man."

I know you’re going to have another great season and I can’t wait to see what secrets your keeping this time!

Thanks, man!
I'm pretty excited about my "tweaks." The boas seem to like it, too!
Do you use a hot spot?
I know Jeff's article says he does.

im in florida too, can you tell me how you do it. Do you just keep the room at a certain temp or do you have a hot spot in the cage. I'm curious because im planning on breeding this year. Also when do you put your boas together? Thanks

voodoomagik Sep 22, 2011 08:13 AM

Hey!
I'm not sure if it's allowed by the Forum rules so I set you a link to an article by PM.
Hopefully others will chime in with advice as well.
Good luck!

When I start cycling my animals my lowest hotspot temp I hit is 68 with an ambient room temp around 65... This is for no more than two weeks... I have never had a respiratory problem in my collection.

Thanks,
