how long can they go without eating?

joann42 Sep 20, 2011 12:01 PM

I have a very young cornsnake. She is 8 grams and she has eaten only once in 7 weeks.Ive been second guessing myself and wondering if that time I thought she ate the pink wasnt stuck to something and thrown away.Ive replicated the one time she did eat(overnight with live pink in a delicup with a small hide)But no go.
Ive tried scenting with tuna and chicken broth, braining and live.
In a deli cup and in her bin. Also played around with temps, cooler and warmer.

She is in a bin with 85 degree flexwatt in the back.Ive gotten all other six to eat and some were even smaller at 4 grams.

Any other suggestions?

I don't know but I have a tiny runt I'm trying to get to eat on his own but he refuses as well. Been force feeding him couple times with rat tails. He's active but won't eat.

Try a small lizard if you can find one. Or ttry scenting the pinky with an anole, or skink is even better. I take the liard and press slightly on the stomach and get some fluid from the cloaca, and rub it on a washed and dried pinky. Also make sure the snake isn't about to shed. I have seen snakes shed twice without ever eating. Split braining works very often, but you said you already tried that. Before force feeding I would try tease feeding. I have gotten lot's of stubborn babies eating this way. However you may have to continue doing it for many months untill the snake finally get's the idea. Check out this link.
