Mixed Emotions...

Has this ever happened to you???
Last year, a very good friend who lives 500 miles away came to visit not long after I hatched a couple of greyband clutches. Being a snake fan, he asked if he could take one home with him. No sooner had the words "of course" left my mouth, he grabbed one and said "I'll take this one"...Of course, that one was considered to be the pick of the litters, but i still had many others to choose from to keep myself so I let him go...Here is the most recent pic sent my way. I feel terrible that my first thought was (and if I had Doug's computer skills I'd post this video) Mel Gibson from the movie Ransom screaming into the phone "Give me back my son!"...lol He is very well taken care of and maybe some years down the road we'll breed him to some of my other stock...Dave.

HA HA!! Your movie clip comparison is classic! I can't stop laughing!!!!

But yeah, don't sweat it. If the snake is in a good home, and doing well, that is what really matters.

Now, I will say this. I know many guys, like myself, who would not have done exactly what your buddy did. If that were me, after very politely asking about getting one, after you answered yes, I myself would have then said something to the effect of, " Please select the ones you would be the most comfortable for me to choose from, " or I first would have asked, " what particular specimens are you holding back for yourself? Please let me know, so I don't pick any of them you want to keep. "

" GIVE ME BACK MY SON! " LOL!!!

Yeah, same here. I could never do it the other way.

Thanks, Dave! If you ever want to embed a you tube video just copy the url at the top of the page where the video is at and paste it below the the message box in the you tube slot. Preview the message first to be sure it comes out. You might have to write a message in the message box because I couldn't get the video to come up without writing something.

At least he went to a friend and not just some "geek off the street" that had the money to buy one of your faves. And he is well cared for and I'm sure your buddy enjoys him, He's a beauty.

The words "sorry, I'm keeping that one" would have remedied the whole situation.

Yes, it certainly would have...But I really don't mind, he has a great home, and is well taken care of. Just thought clip might be funny...Dave.

A clip of that guys hand being cut off would be funny. Its a keeper!!!!!!!!!!! huh read my post below.

FR Sep 21, 2011 09:14 PM

No wonder you guys are so easy to upset around here. if someone tried to take one of my keepers, I would cut his hand off, then seek out all his relatives and cut their hands off, then poke their eyes out, all the relatives too.

Come on, its called a keeper for a reason. Its like boxing, protect yourself at all times. do not depend on the ref. I would cut the refs hands off too. Dang you guys are nice or timid or something.

Normally my first words are, touch that one and I will kill you. enough said. I would say that in a nice way, and then say, thank you afterwords. But touch that one and your dead,

You would be so dead, your mother would not know you were ever born. or her mother, or her mother. Get it, do not touch that snake, its a keeper.

There is a lesson in my post. hahahahahahahahaha

Well said Frank, I feel the same way and do exactly the same thing, and the friends that are allowed over completely understand. As I'm showing off holdbacks, I say "look, but don't touch" and they get the message.

The first rule of snake keeping, that I learned waay back as a young lad is always keep the best babies for yourself and never feel bad about it.

Remind me never to get between you and a keeper snake.

I would have hated to see that one go too Dave. Of course when he said "I'll take that one", I would have responded with "The hell you will". lol

Lot's of funny replies below. One thing I would make absolutely sure of is that he understands that if he ever wants to get rid of it, that it comes back to you.
