Anyone ever had this happen???

ragnew Oct 01, 2003 08:51 PM

Hey,

This season I hatched out around 20 albino babies, and roughly the same amount of normals that were hets. All but two of these eggs were incubated for female. Many ended up being very, very nice tangerine albinos... Sooo, I kept three of them. 1:2 (supposedly). The oldest of these babies is 5 months of age, while the youngest is roughly 3 1/2 or 4. To my dismay, the older albinos (the ones that were supposed to be female) seem to be sprouting small, buldges at the base of the tail... Not huge, but quite small, though I can see them if I look hard enough. My question is, Has anyone had anything like this happen to them? Or have you ever noticed small buldges where the hemipenes would be in a female??? I'm pretty shocked, as both of these eggs were incubated at 82 degrees... Maybe 83 at the very hottest. Any suggestions would be more then appreciated....

Thanks,
Richie

First of all, males can be produced at ANY temperature, at 80 degrees the percentage should be very very small, but get up towards 82 and 83 and 84...your chances increase. I temp sexed most of mine for female at 82-84 degrees early in the season, maybe there were some temp spikes but I got some males. The previous year I got all females at 82-84°. I lowered my incubator temps for rest of season and no more males.

Yep, had that happen to me last year, too. I incubated at 80-81 degrees and had a few males hatch out. This year I incubated at 86, so I am expecting all males.
