I obviously have no idea what happened, someone posted under the news link about the dangers of heat lamps. I have heard of heat lamps being knocked over by a loose reptile. The heat lamp that has stayed on top of that aquarium for years can be knocked over into the trash can by a loose snake or lizard.

Once I was using ceramic room heaters, during the day the heater shut off. While cleaning I moved a garbage can full of shavings too close to the heater, luckily that evening I checked on things and heard the heater running behind the plastic can. The plastic can was close to melting, I'm sure the can full of shavings would have made a huge fire if the can had melted and the shavings poured out to the front of the heater. I went the next day and bought oil filled radiator heaters. The ceramic heaters had me scared for a long time, but it took a close call to get me to act.

So sorry for PE, the picture looked very smoky and horrible. SYR has always been right on top of things when I had a shipping issue. I hope it isn't as bad as it looks.

THAT, makes me ill!

DChristensen Sep 26, 2011 02:54 PM

When you see the outside, you still have some hope that the snakes may not have perished, but those last ones erase all doubt.

My heart sank when I saw the last 2-3 pictures...

Robyn, Chad, Andy and the rest, I am sorry for your loss...

Jeff Favelle Sep 26, 2011 08:52 PM

Jezzus, those pics just break my heart.

viper99 Sep 28, 2011 11:57 PM

this is truly sad and unfortunate, it made me think a little about my snake room and its electrical safty. i have decided to have my electrician friend come over and check things out. maybe update and upgrade if needed. my question is about insurance, is there any way that you know of to insure your collection? i know as mine has grown from 5 snakes to 40 snakes i have oftened wondered about insuring them. i know pet med insurance is avail for dogs and cats and maybe birds( not sure what other species are covered). would business insurance cover the loss of the animals as well as dry goods. not real sure how these things work so please let me know what is available out there.

toshamc Sep 26, 2011 03:50 PM

Livestock insurance covers snake collections.

You might want to tread lightly when you contact your home owner insurance...a lot of them will not cover exotics..and once they find out you have them they will drop you.
For example: A friend of mine house was broken into...they only stole snakes and only a few select morphs...about 7 to 8 grand worth...police reports, finger prints ...nothing.
He contacted his home owners insurance to try to cover his loss, not only did they state they do not cover exotics they also dropped his policy for owning exotics. Took him forever to find new coverage and to this day he pays a lot more for his insuance and they do not know about his snakes.
I contacted mine but didnt let them know it was me and they stated they do not cover exotics nor do they have a policy that would, and its a major nationwide insurance company.

although Tosha is partially correct, I have a Property & Casualty Agents License. Livestock coverage will cover reptiles.

However, almost all Insurance companies will cancel your Homeowners Policy or tenants policy if they know you are trying to insure reptiles with another company.

It is considered a major liability to most insurance companies to cover reptiles and their is really only 1 company to consider, if you have the money:

Lloyds of London.

I know the above info is correct for Indiana/Ohio/Michigan/Texas
If anyone has any other info for the other states, i would love to know more about it. My info comes from State Farm Insurance - where I obtained my License through.

This is making me want to open an insurance company that caters exclusively to reptile owners.

They're pretty calm for having lost 3000 snakes, including some "only ones in existence."
Probably in shock...I'd be flipping out like nobody's business.

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you. - Brian Tracy

It's very sad, all those beautiful animals, all the time, all the work.... gone. But every day you spend with a poor attitude about things you can't control is one more day of your life that is controlled by that adversity.

It will be a tough few months, possibly years, but moving on is the only option. That one boa made it out, Chad and Robyn will too.

TessadasExotics Sep 26, 2011 05:20 PM

Such a horrible tragedy to those at PE and to the reptile community. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Quite sad but a lot of positive attitudes considering what has happened. Makes you stop and think what you have in place...sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, smoke alarm batteries for home collections.
