I found this cute little baby smooth earth snake while digging up old fencing. Sorry 'bout the dirty hands. Building a new pen for my piglet (second pic).

What state are you in Amy? I don't think I've ever seen one of those before except in books.

Hey, Jorge. I'm in N. Fla. We have a lot of these around here, but this is the first time I've found a wee baby one.

I'm in central florida. Those look very interesting. They almost look kingsnake like. Have you ever tried to keep any? What do they eat? How big do they get? Sorry for all the questions, I am just very intrigued!

It says they are found in North Florida and the Panhandle. They get to be about 13 inches and eat insects, worms, and snails. So I guess they are about the size of a DeKay(brown snake). I really like some of the smaller snakes, but they are just too hard to keep, and feed.

I've never seen one that big. Usually they are about 8 to 9 inches or so. Short and chunky. They have a really pretty iridescence in the sunlight. I tried keeping one for a few days, gave it some worms to eat, but it wasn't interested, the worms dried up, so I released it. They like soft damp soil and can be found under flower pots, etc.

We have had luck with ring necks, but they escape real easily. Have to be in a really deep container. We caught one one year and it laid five eggs that hatched in just a few weeks.

I like the little guys, too.

Ha, ha, she's a family member. She's 9 years old and her name is Sue. She's a wild caught piney woods rooter. Was so tiny we had to bottle feed her. One of those "pets" your child just has to have, so mom has something else to take care of, LOL!
