Is it time to hibernate my Argentine B/W Tegu?

kick_baal Oct 01, 2003 10:06 PM

He's not very large but he does have a little fat on his tail. I usually don't hibernate my ratsnakes their first couple of years so I can pack some weight and size on them. Is it really necessary to hibernate them for the first year?

I got my Arg B/W tegu from Bert @ agama int. and he said that it isnt necessary to hibernate them (unless you are planning on breeding??), he hibernates all of his for breeding purposes. My tegu "amoigo" is 4 months old, and I plan on keeping just one tegu only, with no breeding plans, so I have basically just raised his temps a little (admittedly it is easier for me to be able to avoid hibernation as I live in Florida!!)

Hope this helps.

I have an 8' by 3' cage for my two adult tegus. If you have just one tegu I believe you could get away with a 6' by 3' cage. My B&Ws are surprisingly content in their cage as long as their needs are met. When I take them out/outside they become more active.

Squishy's cage is currently 4'x2'x15" and he definitely needs more room. He's about 3 feet long now (a little smaller in the below pic) and is fairly active (gets several hours of "out" time every week). I will be building a 7' x 3' x 2' for him this month. I would encourage you to buy/build the biggest cage you can for him now. As an example of their tremendous growth potential, I got him on June 6th and he measured 14-15" long. Do the math. Good luck!

Mine is 8' long buy 4' wide half is 3' tall and the other half is 2' tall . There is a burrow that I made that is 4'-2'-2'.

My enclosure is 3.5ft wide x 6.5ft long. Amigo is only 22 inches right now, and we are about to move to a bigger house with a much larger yard, so this could all change over the next few months
