Results when breeding visual to 100% het

kangaskritters Sep 29, 2011 03:39 PM

I know what is statistically supposed to happen. What I want to hear are your stories/results when doing a visual to a 100% het. Reason why I ask is I had such pairing this year, only got three babies and none were visual. I expected to get at least one visual. Have any of you done the same breeding and not proved out the het the first time, but did the next time?

Oh Yes, It is totally possible to miss on a visual to het 3 egg clutch, or to hit on all three, the snake gods have a very good sense of humor when it comes to these things.

The odds of missing on all three is 12.5% (1 out of 8).

It seems unlikely to happen, but if there was a list of odds of clutches that have hatched out over the years, there have been some astounding tales of good, and bad luck.

In 09', I breed an albino male to an albino female and a 100% het female! The albino female laid 5 eggs! All hatched and obviously were albinos! The het laid 6 eggs, all hatched and ALL were albinos! I actually got more albinos from a het than a visual! Well, let's just say I paid for that stroke of luck this year on a couple of projects!

I bred a visual to a 100% het and got 9 eggs. Of the 9, 8 hatched and were normals. The 9th went almost to full term but was also a normal. So it happens, and on 3 eggs and not hatching any visuals I would not call that that bad of luck just probability.

visual pied male to het pied female - 9 eggs, first 8 normal hets, and the 9th to hatch was a gorgeous little pied.

i've bred the same female previous years to pied hets and got zero, zilch, nada.

many eggs to get that one pied. many thousands invested, and years gone by.

the odds goods can really screw with you.

i've had the opposite luck with deserts this year, so my luck seems to be improving.

I appreciate the replies thus far. Makes me feel better about my bad luck this time around. Hopefully next time the odds will work in my favor. Keep the stories coming...

This year, bred a Cinny female to a Pastel male, trying to make some Pewters! So, I could have gotten Normals, Pastels, Cinnys and/or Pewters! Well, I got 3 eggs! OK, still got a shot, right? Well, I got 3 normal males! Ouch!

Also bred a 100% het for Caramel male to a Normal female to make poss Het females! Got 4 eggs, yep, you guessed it 4 boys!

Bred an albino male to a het girl 2 years in a row. Total of 14 eggs. No visuals. Starting to believe that she is not a het......1 more year, then she is not a het. Bad thing about it, is that I purchased 8 girls from the same person at the same time 3 years ago. None of the others have been bred....slow growers......hopefully the odds will be better this winter when a couple of the other are ready.....we will see.....
