Warning - may be disturbing!!

dmmalpert Sep 29, 2011 06:47 PM

This came out of a Lesser Platinum x Normal clutch. The rest of the babies were normals and lessers, all perfect. There was one other tiny egg in the clutch where the baby was formed normally, but was too small to pip the shell, so it suffocated and died before hatching.

But this one just blows my mind... This is one for Ripley's because this baby was alive, but had no head!

I've never seen anything like this. In place of the head was just and air filled sac with what looked like another tail end going through it. The baby was humanely euthanized as there is no way it could survive.

I'm posting here just for those who enjoy trying to figure these things out...

Why oh Why does Kingsnake make you do links for pictures instead of just letting you uplaod a JPEG?

Let's try this one more time...

It is sad to see this, not every new unseen creation is a thing of beauty.

I had something similar happen last year from a Pastel Possible Het Ghost x Spider pairing.

Better days ahead.

I hatched out Twins and Triplets out of a 4 egg clutch. The Twins are perfect, just small. The Triplets are TINY, about 16 grams each. One is perfect. One has only a very small kink in her neck, not very noticable and not life threatening. The 3rd Triplet wasn't so lucky. Perfect unkinked body, but doesn't have much of a face. They were really cramed in the egg and I think where this one's face was during development there just wasn't enough room for it to develope normally. I know I should put him down but he's spunky and I can't bring myself to do it yet. When he runs out of spunk I guess I'll have to. Not looking forward to it. He's a couple weeks old now and going strong.

May be this should be a new thread, but I just wanted to first tell Slytherlynn and Reptiledan that I sympathize with them. Putting any animal down is hard.

My gruesome thoughts are of euthanizing methods and disection. I remember dissecting a toad in my HS A&P class, and our teacher had a tank full of live leopard toads. He basically took a needle and "scrambled" their brains, so that their hearts would continue to beat when we opened them up. I was surprised at how quickly the toads passed.
Most people who mention euthanasia here on KS, commonly use the freezer. While it might be messier and more emotionally traumatic for the keeper, I wonder if chopping off the head would be quicker and more humane.

I also kinda think it would be interesting to do a necropsy on reptiledan's hatchling.

Violetdixie Sep 30, 2011 07:28 AM

meant dmmalpert, not reptiledan. read the wrong poster name.

JYohe Sep 30, 2011 03:36 PM

actually you are correct...the freezer is worse and the chop is fastest....

....and letting them lay around till they are not spunky is worse yet actually....

I had 2 super black pastels...soon as the first one put it's head out I could see it was on right side up...but the neck had a 360 degree turn to it...yea...full circle...so I took it from egg and didn't let it even hatch....the same with it's sibling...they were both kinked...and taken care of as fast as possible.....no need to hatch them and think well...maybe ..maybe I can make a pet out of it...?...or 50$...

....genetics is a screwed up thing......

good luck...feed female well...you may not egt any deformities at all from now on......

To me, it kinda looks like conjoined twins. It looks almost like there are 2 spines and yolk sacs, in this pic. weird, that it didnt die sooner.
