Boa eat shed?

combs reptiles Oct 02, 2011 09:32 PM

I have never seen it, nor have I heard of it. But my Prodigy male looks as if he just shed, I know he was due and looked as if he was going into shed.
No shed skin in cage however.

Has anyone ever had thier boa eat thier shed skin?
I doubt he did, just curious if anyone else has witnessed such a thing.

Thanks
Mike

Yes they do sometimes Mr. Mike. I have seen it several times. I have no idea why they do that. Strange huh!?

i posted on this topic several months ago when my young male hypo ate his. nobody responded and it made me feel as if i were crazy. im happy to finally realize im not. i went in the room one day, he was glowing. i knew he was ready to shed. he had that fresh oily sheen to him like he just shedded before i walked into the room. there was nothing in his cage.

someone also just posted about a snake eating another snake. that brings another question to mind. i have a triple het mg and double het snow that should be ready this year and was wondering about size differences in breeding pairs. shes only a year older but shes a lot bigger. hes in the 4 ft range and really slender shes 7 and robust. whats the biggest difference in size you've been successful in breeding?

boaphile Oct 04, 2011 07:14 AM

I have bred a 3 1/2' male with an 8' female. I have bred a 4' male with a legit 10'. She had 64 babies. The largest litter I have ever produced.

I have also had two males squished to death by their respective females when I have had large size disparities. So I am careful. For instance, when I have young and small 3 1/2' males that I wish to breed, I never put them in with the really big girls. A 7' female is really pushing what I think are the limits for a very small young breeder for this reason.

thanks for the insight. i'll be watching them very closely. i put them together the other day. they immediately coiled together and haven't seperated since. shes competelty dominated the relationship so far. he looks happy to be in her warmth.
