Help with axolotls

Hey guys. I have two quick questions. If I use live food or feed the axolotls by holding the food at the top of the tank, can I use small gravel? I filled my entire tank with it and now regret it. Do you think it would be safe? Also my other question is would feeding it brine shrimp be a good food source and would i have to devide the two of them?
