Trying to understand all these stripes..

rainbowsrus Oct 13, 2011 11:36 AM

Just because I produced them does not mean I understand why all of a sudden they popped up in rapid succession. Figured I'd put all three lines in one post along with some of my observations.

Three varieties of stripes from three different bloodlines showed up in my litters between last year and this year.

Last years Harriet x Ozzy litter produced lateral stripes (a repeated pairing produced a second litter this year with similar stripes but not as intense)

Then this year I produced some stripes out of two different lines none of which are known to be related to one another.....

From the "Pearls" came Zebra striping (vertical blending between Dorsal and lateral patterns)...

And in the second litter of Pearls (same Sire) were two reduced dorsal pattern / lateral striped babies....

And in the third unrelated line came some unexpected, totally insane striping...

While there are similarities between the three lines, there are differences as well...

HA-OZ babies do not have "Pearl" lateral markings, closest any of the babies (stripped or not) get is Bullseyes and/or super thick crescents with smallish dark areas at bottom.

Pearl Strippers Have the typical filled in Pearl side patterns, even when blended (horizontally or vertically) into stripes.

Zoey/Ziggy line is way different with head to tail Dorsal striping which neither of the other two exhibit and jumbled/speckled lateral patterns.

Inspired by a question from Jeff Clark that the Pearls and the Walsh Clown Phase line both came from Florida and might be related, I dug up some of his old pics on one of his Walsh animals...

Those pics of his female do look a lot like the Pearls and the Aby Pearls I recently produced. Very possible the "Pearls" are related to the Walsh line but impossible to prove one way or the other as the Walsh line appears to have been weak and died out. Maybe some hets did survive and that's where the Pearls came from?

Dave,
...A friend here in Georgia who has animals from both you and I had two litters this week and says there are some stripers among them. He had exceptionally long gestation for both litters. His stripes may be gestational temperature related.

"His stripes may be gestational temperature related."

That's an interesting thought. How much of an effect do you think gestational temperatures have on pattern and color?

That is indeed interesting... My het Hypo female that dropped a small litter of strange looking Hypos also had a long gestation time and was kept in a Boaphile. Hmmm...

This may not apply to our BRBs, but I know that when I used to breed leopard geckos, the brighest babies were always produced with the shortest incubation times, and thus were always males (becuase males incubate at a higher temp, thus a shorter incubation time). This could potentially hold true, I suppose, for brbs but I have no way of knowing, just something that popped in my head that seems to maybe slightly relate......

Hmmm, interesting, Zoe was in a boaphile with effectively lower temps and longer gestation (still working out how to heat) but Apricot was in my oak cages with RHP's and constant temps that I've been using for years with no stripes.

Just guessing that your stripes in litters this year are genetic rather than related to gestational temperatures. The litter of BRBs that I had with a few neck stripes this year was a long and cooler than normal gestation for here. I think it is pretty well accepted (though possibly not proven) that suboptimal incubation temperatures result in abberancies that can range from a little striping to really weird pattern variations and even serious birth defects.

Trust me I keep pondering the hows and why's myself. At this time I am planning on working all three lines like they are genetic, only time will tell for sure. Next years repeat pairings will be a key piece in the puzzle and will be done in prime physical locations. Nothing but the best for these gems!!!
