Ball Python Alcohol Poisoning

mgoblue347 Oct 16, 2011 07:06 PM

Okay, some ***hole poured alcohol into two tubs of my snake rack when I wasn't there(a rms friend) and I didn't find it until yesterday morning. Both snakes homes reaked of the whiskey that was poured in and the entire enclosure soaked. The one female hypo was visibly intoxicated and couldn't support her body the other male hypo seemed to be okay. After a few quick emails to breeders I was advised to go to the vet asap that alcohol is extremely toxic to snakes. I found an emergency vet and took both in where they were placed in a heated oxygen chamber with a saline solution being pumped through their cloaca. The vet was also 24/7 and so they were being soaked in warm water every 15 minutes. The bill before the specialist even looked at either snake was $300. I wanted to know more about alcohol and snakes. I cannot find a single website that talks about what goes on in the body of the snake when it is introduced to alcohol. This happened this yesterday morning and I am, was devastated. I picked up both snakes this afternoon and they are hopefully on the way to recovery. Both can support themselves and are active. The vet is extremely hopeful as well. She had never seen a case such as this and couldn't find any literature on the topic as well. She is worried about long term liver and kidney damage. Any knowledge what so ever is greatly appreciated. My email is mgoblue347@gmail.com. Also what are the laws on this type of situation. Can legal action be taken for cruelty to animals?

Thanks Again!

That's a shame! What a d!ck! I'd be having a serious confrontation w/the D-bag!

I was furious, there was a verbal and physical altercation shortly after making sure my snakes were taken care of and at the vet getting the care they needed.

I would also suggest small claims court to make them pay for the vet care your snakes needed. Stick it to the a$$hat who did this.

Having a history of selling supplements I would say you could try a Liver cleanse of sorts. Milk Thistle is a common herb used in humans for cleansing liver. I would say lb for lb modify the dose to the animals size. That would be the best advice I can offer.

you could surely have them fined / arrested for it...

fresh air and fresh water soaks....?...sounds fair enough now for that....

....I wouldn't think whiskey would affect them at all if they didn't soak in it?....

....liver and kidney damage after one time....?...
wonder how the livers in here reading are doing right now?....
my kidneys hurt actually when I drink Mike's Hard Lemonade ....wonder why...?....Jim Beam never hurt me that way...
(actually feel the kidneys hurt)....

....good luck....

get new friends....really...>>>

Based off what I've been hearing alcohol is extremely toxic to snakes even a slight amount can harm a snake. The snakes were sitting in a layer of the whiskey for a minimum of 7 hrs. Every breath they took would have been that of alcohol. The snake was visually intoxicated and couldn't even support her own head up. The vet is hoping this being the first time there is no prolonged damage. Since there haven't been any reported cases it was hard for her to say any side effects. They are both doing fine for now. Appreciate the response, I do want to pursue some legal action. The person who did it wasn't seen by anyone so that is the difficult part.

I wish the best of luck to you and your snakes. What a horrible experience for you and them. I hope you are able to get justice for them. At the very least if you can't get them on animal cruelty hopefully you could sue them to recoup the vet bills. I'm assuming the person was drunk when they did it, but even so, it's scarey they'd do that to a living animal and someone's beloved pets. What's next? They say animal abuse can be a doorway to even worse things.

I (personally) would set up a hidden camera with VERY good audio. Call him over to talk about it, and in a very deceptive fashion, get him to admit to it on camera. Say things like, "The snakes are doing good now, what were you thinking man?" And he will probably self incriminate rite there. Just act like your still friends and get him to admit to it in an apologetic fashion, just so long as you get the confession.

SteveinIL Oct 16, 2011 11:12 PM

if legal action doesn't work there are other ways, I'm not condoning the use of a baseball bat or anything but I certainly would not admit to seeing any such thing either =D

I would have taken advantage of this time to get him to bread that ugly pastel that no one mates with....... all jokeing aside, im sorry to hear about this and i know i would be the one getting sued in this situation for the other persons hospital bills for when i got done with him. unfortunatly i dont think you can video tape him without his knowledge and have it be admisable in court, so you might just have to settle with puting his phone number in the hardcore gay bondage section on craigslist or something of those sorts to get some revenge.

Barker Oct 18, 2011 09:01 AM

Depending on where he lives it might be possible to audio record him. I know in Iowa a while back only one person of the conversation had to know it was being taped in order for it to be admissable in court. Granted I don't know the current law. Good luck to you in getting everything settled. I kinda like the craigslist idea though
