Hatchlings Won't Eat

JMo Oct 18, 2011 11:28 AM

I need some help here. I have two hatchlings about 2 mos old; neither has eaten since hatching. They ignore all items presented to them; including live mouse hoppers. Yesterday I enclosed each hatchling and the mouse in individual paper bags , again no response; the mice are still alive and moving around. Three other hatchlings from the same clutch have been eating great on f/t mouse hoppers and rat pups. All are kept in the same location in individual containers, with hides and same temps.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

Time to assist feed. They usually get going on their own pretty quickly after that.

I think it's time to force feed (or assist feed...sounds less drastic)...it's been long enough

Yeah, might be assist feeding time if they won't eat either live or f/t on their own.

I had one baby this year, a twin who was only 37 grams at hatching, who wouldn't do live or f/t. This past weekend I picked him up, put the head of a f/t fuzzy mouse into his mouth, not down his throat or anything, just set the head in his mouth with the body hanging out. I then set him down in his tub and he proceeded to eat it on his own.

Hopefully that will work for your babies as well. Good luck!

Jim,
I have a really good video that I took of my friend Jason of Chico Reptiles assist feeding one of my snakes. Shoot me an email with your title as the subject and I can forward it to you. V/R Paige

Balls - As many as my husband will tolerate...other various reptiles, animals, kids and a smoking sweet husband; would be perfect if he only liked ball pythons...

Assist feeding could be very traumatic to the snake, but in this case I think it it necessary, just proceed with caution!
