I do not know what I have

HerpVenue Oct 21, 2011 02:47 AM

Day 46
I see the leucistic to the right. I see what looks like a mojave to the left. But what are the two in the middle?

Or perhaps Lucy to the right. Normal to the left, and two mojave that have not darkened yet?

Then again one of their grandfathers is a possible het ghost. Could Dad have been a het ghost too? Could mom have been one too?

Ritchie,

It is very common to see mojaves look like that when the eggs are cut a little on the early side. It looks like to me you have a BEL, a normal and 2 mojos.

Congratulations on producing the super mojave.

If you absolutely cannot wait the normal incubation time, instead of cutting the whole top off and removing it, leaving the egg so open and the babies and egg fluid exposed to the elements, you can cut a much smaller flap. Not actually removing any of the egg shell, but just cut a flap, like two sides of a narrow triangle but don't cut the 3rd side. So you can lift up the small flap, make sure the baby is ok, then close it back down so they are more protected. They'd easily be able to push the flap open when they are actually ready to hatch, but wouldn't be so exposed in the mean time with the whole top of their egg gone. Good luck with the babies and congrats on the Lucy!

If Brian (FGS) says its two mojos, then its two mojos, He has seem more babies than anybody in that department.

But aside from that, I must say you did a great job of cutting open those eggs, the veins look completely untouched, They appear to have easily detached from the egg wall so the eggs were in the final stage of development.

Just thought I would share my method of egg slitting, it is copied from a post I did a while back. It offers a great view inside the egg, keeps the snakes protected, removes the minimum amount of egg shell, impacts the veins very little, it also minimizes handling of the egg, I can make this slit in less than 10 seconds.

In the Past "I used a nice little pair of surgical scissors. They worked fine but were a bit tedious to use, and I did not like having to put the scissors inside the egg to make the cut, also hard to avoid cutting veins (which is not much of a problem for a full term snake). Now I use a big old pair of scissors. I open them wide and rest them flat on the surface of the egg, I begin at one end and start my cut, once I get a bit of the egg pinched in the scissors I can slit the egg open from end to end in a single stroke, I cut the absolute smallest sliver possible and often don't damage any veins, I get a great view inside and have never had a problem. I incubate at 88.5 degrees and slit at 55 days (an easy way to figure out 55 days from being laid is go forward 2 month and then back up 5 days, made my head hurt otherwise). one big tip on choosing the right pair of scissors for this method is to have THIN blades, it makes getting a starting bite on the egg much easier."

Hope this helps, good luck with those pretty snakes.

I think I just have to be more patient.
That will be a challenge. And if I really can't wait..... then I will wait until day 52 at least and only cut small.

I got a wee bit carried away.
