We Have Dimples!

chefdev Oct 24, 2011 02:47 PM

My wife just called me here at work and stated that she checked the eggs when she got home... No change temp was great. 30 min later she checked again and saw a couple dimples in the top egg.

Eggs are in large area of moist vermiculite, which is floating in one inch of water inside of a sweater box. This set up can be seen on my facebook listed below. Tomorrow is the 49 Day anniversary for this Thayeri clutch. Initial incubation was between 82-84 and for the last two weeks 79-81 degrees.

Has Christmas come early or do I need to make an adjustment when I get home?

I will add pics when I get there of course.

Thanks in advance!

Usually 60 days for eggs to hatch , give or take a few days depending on temps.

I have not seen you pic on Facbook (probably best you post it here to make it easier for us non facebook users). But it "sounds" like you need to make sure the eggs are not sitting on dried vermiculite. Vermiculite is problematic when adding to much or to little water. Perlite allows more airflow, less chance of molding and is pretty much bullet proof when adding to much water 9unless the eggs are floating in water because you have more water than perlite).

In a nushell have these elaborate setups with eggs floating on water, vermiculte, orchid moss ectc, are overkill. Colubird eggs are very simple and tough. Even with cold temps they will hatch-just takes longer.

Just add water to perlite in a shoebox and sit the eggs in a closet or someplace quite and forget about them. Most of us old timeer have done this thousands of times without incubators, floating eggs ect with no problems and hatched out thousands of babies.

At those temps you will get hatchling thayeri at 49 days but they will be smaller when compared to 60 day hatchlings.......
I have hatched thayeri at 49 days at 82F.......Some of the smallest thayeri hatchlings I've had....hard to get to eat too.........Now I incubate at around 78F and they hatch out at 60 days or so and are much more robust & hardier......

Colubrid eggs are not like Boid eggs and do not require the higher temps boid breeders incubate their eggs at......

BTW....Post pics of your "thayeri"
The last time I looked on your FB page you had a Mex Mex and Thayeri together.........

Congrats on the fertile "late" eggs........

u are correct John... They are as they are labeled on facebook thayeri x mex mex... I figured if I posted that here I would get digitally shanked and my post would be re-located to the hybrid forum. Here goes nothing...

I know you don't condone that sort of thing but thanks for the good advice in the beginning anyways!

Here are the photos of the eggs and the gravid female...
There are only two to three good eggs here it seems... Three are still nice and white but the one on the bottom is showing no veins when candled. I will post more pics as they hatch but the dimple pics did not come out...

Any bets as to what day they will hatch?

I don't really care what others do anymore.....just as long as they are represented honestly......which is always lost downstream.......

So us that want uncompromised mexicana just know who to buy from.......

I would say you have around 7 days for the first piper if one just dimpled........I bet the average temps are closer to 80 than 82 or 84 for the duration......

Point taken John... I never thought about it that way.

I don't really care what people think of me just like you don't really care what people do. In the future can I contact you directly with questions. Is that ok with you?

Are you going to be in Pasadena this weekend? I'm still on the fence about it.
