Just curious about something...for those familiar with the San Antonio area

JLC Oct 02, 2003 09:02 AM

Hey all,

We lived in San Antonio for about four years. (Just recently moved to Virginia). When my daughter started showing an avid interestin snakes, we started making visits to the Snake Farm just north of the city on I-35. Are any of you familiar with it? Does anyone that owns it or works there ever frequent these forums? Would you admit it if you did?

Seriously though, I'm curious about what anyone thinks about that place, or places like it. Even before I began learning how to care for snakes, I was concerned about how they were keeping some of their animals, although to my admittedly untrained eye, they all seemed in good health. But now that I know a lot more about good husbandry practices, I really wonder how they can keep their animals healthy.

For those unfamiliar with it, it is like a small, private zoo, focussing primarily on snakes and reptiles, but they have quite a few other exotic mammals and birds, too.

Any comments from those who know the place would be greatly welcome. Especially if you work there and can talk to me about how the animals are kept.

Thanks!!
Judy

Yea i grew up in new bransfuls and houston and now live in san antonio, the place has been there for ever and he does not get a lot of traffic. I have not been there in a while but from what ive seen most of the reptiles and smaller animals are pretty well taken care of. For what hes dealing with and he has done alot for education but there are some questionable practices there as most places. He has been working with mostly little money and he has some of the same animals i saw there 20 years ago, so basiclly hes doing decent for wht he has to deal with. But the larger animals are a different question. But he does love his animals from what i have seen and talked to him not to mention he been there doing the same thing even when snakes wernt cool for at least 30 years same spot and dedicated mostly to reptiles. Thanks so much for the reply and the positive words. I'll always have fond memories of that place and hope I can get back there again someday. I didn't realize it had been around for that long, but now that I think about it, I can remember driving past it on trips to/through San Antonio a couple decades ago. If we still lived there, I'd want to talk with the owner about doing some volunteer work there on the weekends. I'm sure they could use the help, if nothing else, cleaning out cages and updating the little info labels that are supposed to be on the cages, but missing or wrong on most.

Given all the circumstances, they do a good job. It'd just be nice if they had a few more acres of land, some new, bigger buildings, and enough money for all those animals to have ideal housing. But I guess we all wish for that in our lives, huh?

Anyhow...thanks!
