$2000 Mistake?

jmartin104 Oct 02, 2003 09:48 AM

I bought a proven adult female 100% het albino more than 2 years ago. She was probed 5 scales deep. In two years of breeding, I have witnessed copulation but so far no eggs. My male is proven. I think she may have had follicles (checked by palpation).

To my questions:

1) In your experience, what has your snake that probed to 5 been?
2) Do you witness males copulating? I housed two males together for years and never witnessed copulation.

Going into the 3rd breeding year and I'm a bit (alot) nervous.

Thanks for your input!

" I housed two males together for years and never witnessed copulation."

This is a good thing.

He is questioning if his female is really a female. Hence the questions whether two males have been seen copulating.
jmartin I have heard about females trying to do that but not males. Later, Chris

I've seen a proven breeder male trying to mate a male who has never been seen mating and has never fathered any eggs in two years of trying. I had my vet double check the unproven and he confirmed male as it was sold to me. I've been extra careful to keep him separate from other males now just to be sure he wasn't failing to breed due to loosing dominance battles. Maybe he'll finally prove this year (he's a 66% chance het caramel).

I have a friend who witnessed two of his males copulating. I think the scenario was that he put them together for combat and when he came back to check on them they were "mating". Good luck.

I've seen two males "doin it" with corn snakes but not with ball pythons. Yah, I suppose it's possible, but like Jeff said, 5 scales is not alot.

Thanks for all the replies - on and off-line!

I'm just wiggin a bit as it's hard to go back to the seller after 3 years and tell him the snake has problems. I normally breed my albino to 5 females. This year he is going to have just two females - including this one.
