Breeding Advice

SlidellReptileRescue Oct 26, 2011 07:30 PM

I've been breeding monitors for several years and am FINALLY getting into the ball python morph craze...That being said, I have a few adult / sub-adult morphs and would like any recommendations and or tips for breeding them (all are between 800g-2000g)...also, anyone wanting to come off of some females would be nice because I'm pretty stocked up on the boys. I'm interested in any advice of purchases I should make to get the "ideal" mate for some of the boys and/or anything else that will be beneficial to know....Thanks!

get rid of the het albino male and het pied male...and the spider male....and unless you get some girls with ghost genes ..sell the ghost and get some female ghost double triples...sell him anyways for now...buy girls...

....keep buying double triple females that match and mix with what you got.....stuff is cheap now...you can get all kinds of stuff.....blasts are always cool...buy more...lesserbees or pastel lessers are a must in there also...

..good luck...

It really is a personal choice in many ways. Your personal goals will determine your breeding plan, as well as if you have a long or short term angle on building your collection and of course generating revenue to put into other projects. Right off the bat though I would dump the 1.0 het pied 1.0 spider and 1.0 het albino, I dont see any use of them for you. I would breed the male albino to the hets exclusively to avoid getting any 50% hets, I really try to avoid anything other than 100% hets if possible. When the less then 100% hets get to breeding age you will have visuals and 100% hets by then and will be wishing you did not have so many snakes to deal with. My goals are mostly toward the long term reward, so I tend to plan my breeding so as to get as many different morphs into the babies I produce, lots of anything het pied, or double and triple codom/dom combinations. I would put the ghost male to pied female to make 100% double recessives, the Pied male I would put with the pinstripe and lemonblast. This leaves the male Pinstripe, male Bumblebee and male Superpastel, hmmmmm, what to do, well, the Bumblebee would also go great with the lemonblast, The superpastel works great for short term goals, the pinstripe is a little weak compared to your other males I dont know if I would be breeding him.
This is only my opinion, but it will set you up well in 4 to 5 years when all the pretty hets come back together and make some awesome snakes, Pastel Pied, superpastel pied, lemonblast pieds, ghost pieds etc. If you want to make the best snakes in the short term it would be a different plan.
Hope this helps,

Mark

Thanks for the input...I'm interested in short term production at the present time so I can recoup some of my investment. I plan on acquiring a few more females but I would like to know which females I should be purchasing in order to get the best results with the males and females I presently have. Also, cost is definitely an issue so I'd like to keep my spending down as much as possible but also improve my return-on-investment odds with the "right" females. I was planning on putting the spider with the pastel for obvious reasons...you dont think that would be worth the time? If not, what should I be putting with the pastel? The pinstripe? Basically, I would like to get as many visual morphs out of the females this year to recoup and focus on the "better" IE: more expensive double-triple/etc. doms next year...any insight would be appreciated and put to good use.

The Bumblebee (Spider Pastel) male eliminates any need of a spider, unless the bumblebee is too young to breed now. To get an idea of where you would like to head for short (also long) goals is to check the prices of snakes and see what is most desireable (highest priced) and then go for it. The light and bright snakes are always a hot commodity, the recessives will hold on to higher prices much longer than Dom and Codom, working toward multiple gene snakes is always good, it takes years to get ahead of the curve so best to start now working toward the killer snakes of tomorrow, to generate a few bucks now for little investment you could really use a few or more breeder normal females, or pick up some pastel females, that way you could make some stuff to sell now and also work toward setting up your future collection. Always a long shot is to pick up a couple dinker projects, unproven odd snakes are always popping up here and there, if one works out you will be the one with the new and exciting morph.
Also, Always, above all, do what makes you most happy, snakes can be a real grind at times and if you are not having fun or doing something with them that excites you then you and your snakes will suffer.

Best of luck with all your future projects,

Mark
