I'm planning on getting a Fire-bellied newt in a few days. I was wondering if it's okay to get just one, or if they need "friends"?

Most newts are quite sociable and are usually kept in groups, but don't overcrowd the tank.

I have 2 firebellies, and have always kept them in pairs (simply because I have a 10 gallon tank, and can't fit more than 2 in there). Definitely try not to overcrowd the tank though, I once had a really REALLY small tank (like, 3 gallons) with 2 or 3 newts in it, and one of them actually committed suicide O__O
You CAN keep several firebellied newts (if they are really firebellies and not paddletails) in one tank, but they don't NEED a "friend".
If you are getting your firebelly/firebellies from a pet store, make sure what species you are getting; pet stores often label all kinds of newts "firebellied newts".
