Big lizard and me

Dragon Master Oct 02, 2003 10:03 AM

What's up? Doing OK in school. still working a ton. Hanging w/the lizards. Hopefully should get my Associate's next year
and my Black Belt in Karate, whichever comes first. Kane is back on Hornworms, like last year. I still have three anoles and two geckoes(golden and a turkish) and a collared lizard. I still have my two handicapped leos. next goal, kicking a bad habit and getting wheels, whichever comes first. After all, women tend to be somewhat cruel to dudes w/out cars, unless they've hit the bottle. How is everybody here?

What's wrong with your 2 leos? Did you rescue/adopt them? I almost "rescued" 2 more from Petco last week since there were about 35 babies in a tiny tank & several of them were missing tails or were really malnourished. Instead, I got 2 baby beardies who were in the same conditions & the stupid checker at Petco didn't see me carrying the box next to my purse so she didn't ring me up & since I highly dislike Petco, I didn't speak up so I walked out with $130 worth of lizards, hehehe. I haven't posted in this forum in a while since I too am in school & am busy, but I posted a pic of my male, named Dragon. (I know, really original name huh? I have too many lizards & ran out of names!)

thats not something i would boast about. no matter how "stupid" the people are at a store thats gives you NO right to do what you did and you should be ashamed.

shortydsm Oct 02, 2003 08:06 PM

Hey, I'm not boasting nor am I ashamed so you don't need to criticize me mister! I know it probably wasn't the most honest or best thing to do but I do have a conscious & I also have had many issues with Petco (as do a lot of people, visit the link below for some horrible facts). So I don't feel bad in the slightest for "rescuing" those Beardie babies & giving them a good home. I'm not saying my actions were justified but I am an otherwise good person & I'm saying I don't feel bad so I don't need any moral lectures about this. A 2 lizard loss for Petco is not a big deal, as most reptile losses in this store are either considered to be death or escapees. Petco's animal sales account for only 5% of their overall sales. It's not like I walked out with a $500 tank or something like that, that they would actually CARE about.

While I was in there, there were 2 guys looking at baby leos as a "toy" for their cat! The store employee just laughed & suggested a "faster lizard." I complained several times about many cases of neglect, improper conditions, etc (the list goes on) that I have seen in the 2 stores in my area & nothing has been done to this day, it makes me sad & sick... so I'm not going to go out of my way to return to pay money to a corporation that doesn't take it's customers concerns, complaints and the welfare of the animals seriously.

yes, what you did is wrong. you STOLE. you could go to JAIL for that. you don't seem to realize those facts. im not saying "saving" the beardies is bad in the least. and if someone is saying something about wanting a toy for there cat. educate them about the lizards or tell them the lizards have toxins in them that will kill the cat if they come in contact. with that i doubt they would buy one. there are better solutions to problems then what you did. think about some others before committing a crime next time. im ending it here, you can email me if you want. but im not gonna fight in the ksnake forums

Stealing for a good cause is wrong, but lying is okay? Personally I don't think stealing is the answer. The best answer is to shop somewhere else!

shortydsm Oct 03, 2003 03:19 PM

I had a feeling that sharing my "story" would spark something here... I am not going to argue about it anymore or defend myself. I will just say one more time that I know what I did was wrong but I am not feeling bad about it, and I know my bad feelings for Petco do not justify it either. But it was not like I deliberately plotted to go into the store & steal 2 baby lizards & then brag about it. I went in there for crickets & just had to get a new baby or two when I saw them, you all know how that goes. And it just so happened that the checker didn't see me holding the box so she didn't charge me & I just so happened not to speak up. Ok ok, I was not honest, you guys can hate me for that, that is fine! To each his own, I'm a horrible person I guess. I'm sure I would get fined or cited or the checker would be reprimanded if Petco cared enough about it's animals rather then figure they died or got loose if they ever did an inventory & therefore put up cameras or have security. However, none of the above is true in this case so thats why I am not worried about any criminal charges. I will leave it at that & you don't have to post to me or talk to me anymore...

Hi, I'm just going to give you my support here. I bought my first lizard a couple months ago, a water dragon. I had no idea how big he was even going to get until i got to the counter and the guy said 4 feet. yipes! but i was in love so I didn't want him to be lonely so there was another one at the petstore with him so i went back later that week and bought the second one. While there I told hte manager that my first lizard had a lumb on his jaw that worried me and that i was going to take him to the vet and would he cover any of that. He was like no just put some polysporion on it if it gets worse to bring it back and he would look at it. Any way i was buying the second one that day and some other stuff and my order came to 137.45 so i gave the guy 140 dollars and he gave me back 20 dollars and change! cha ching! I was like htat will help pay for my vet visit So sometimes you have to do what you have to do, the guy was slimey so so was I. ONe good turn deserves another

If this pet store is so awful, why do you buy your crickets there? You're supporting them.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.

I despise Petco I guarantee you those animals would have died in there and I dont think one should have to pay for trying to save somthing they dont know jacks*it about when it comes to careing for them, Hey I'm not taking sides in this "debate" but on the other hand you should realize that doing that (or atleast buying them) gives them money to send away for more, I'd say buy from someone that sells quality reptiles so they stay in the biz and allow Petco to have thiers die and eventually as craptastic as it sounds they may realize not to sell and go out of the biz. Just my 2 cents!

P.S. Hubert is doing swell! (sorry had to say something relating)

Regardless of how you prefer to justify the action, stealing is a crime. The price of merchandise directly correlates to the amount of theft the company experiences. Therefore, you steal 2 $65 dragons and an honest person will pay $70 because of your crime. Any company expects to experience some theft, whether it is due to employee’s negligence or customer’s actions. It is not the store that suffers, it is honest people like me who would like to purchase merchandise that is not marked up 200% so the company can make a profit.

In the past I have purchased a sick water dragon that did eventually die. (RIP chub chub) I asked if they would pay for vet bills and was unable to get anywhere with the store management. I called the corporate office and complained, they contacted the store and all of my vet bills were paid for. In addition, when my dragon died they refunded my original purchase price as well. It was a tough month, but with a little persistence the company did the right thing.

Granted, it is easier to steal than follow an honest chain of actions to get what one feels is the humane thing. However, in my mind what you have done is no better than the pet stores action towards those dragons. You did not do the right thing. There are other options that you were either to lazy or ignorant to explore. It is easier to be a criminal than an honest person, until you get caught. Maybe you will meet a nice "cell mate" that is into chicks who dig lizards.

I rescued mine. Some lady didn't want them. One has bad legs and the other one has one eye(actually both are there, but only one functoins properly)
