What is too cold?

kyle1745 Oct 02, 2003 10:56 AM

Well fall is here, and winter may be soon to follow, and I just wanted to see what is considered too cold for darts. I hear most people say not much under 70. Every year as season change it always takes me a few weeks to get the ducts adjusted just right. So for example I keep my house at 72, but right now my bedroom is about 67-69, where my imitators are. Now my other tanks are fine, but I thought I would ask.

I don't like to let my frogs get below 70 for this reason I went to Wal-Mart and got a little $15 box space heater that I use in the winter it does the job and its cheep

But is it safe? Those things are known for buring houses down. I have thought of doing the same for myself and the frogs, as depending on how many people are downstairs the heat will not turn on, and the upsatairs can get a bit chili.

I have been wondering the same myself the last couple days. here in philadelphia the weather keeps jumping around. I have all my darts in one room, so there is less to worry about. I am just keeping it around room temp. basically high 60's to mid 70's right now. I think over heating is more of a worry then being too cold. It is pretty cold today and everyone is doing fine. In fact my imitators like it cooler, and have started calling since the temp. drop. I think the temps you posted are fine for now.

Sorry for hijacking this posting, but I don't know many philadelphians that are into darts. Do you know any good frog or vivarium shops around here? I know of one up in easton, but there seems to be very little around philly. I can't wait until the november reptile show. There are usually a lot of pdfs.

I'm now in DE (Newark), but I was from the Lancaster area. Both are about 40 minutes from Philly. I no longer have frogs, but have some Phelsuma and stuff.
Best,
Justin

I'm just north of Phila, in Bensalem, PA. Frazer Zoo on Rt 30 just east of Rt 202 has a great frog room. Last time I was there he had a bunch of different PDF's. Take a look at his web site http://www.frazerzoo.com/, BTW what species do you keep ?

1.2.1 (20 tads) Leucs
1.1.15 Green/Black Auratus
0.1.0 Blue/Black Auratus
0.0.3 Azureus
1.0.1 Imitator
0.0.4 Yellow Vents

I would have to say Frazer Zoo is the only "store" that really has darts. They do have a lot of frogs in their reptile room, but its mainly tincs. Don't get me wrong, as they are still cool but I am trying to get more thumbnails right now. In my opinion they charge a little too much for me, but it is still worth checking it out (about 30 minutes out of philly). What store is in Easton? There aren't any good pet stores in Philly (or at least that i know of) . Also Frazer has FF and small crickets for sale. As for other philadelphians that keep PDF's, well I don't know any. Feel free to email at underautumnskies@aol.com if you want to talk darts, or whatever. Yeah, I am looking forward to the Nov. show as well, although I don't know if I'll have any money to get frogs.. but I will go either way. Sorry for this being so long of a post.

Where is the show in Nov ?

jbeetle Oct 02, 2003 06:54 PM

here is a link to the show info:
http://www.narbc.com/htm_phil/index_phili.htm
it is in valley forge, just outside of philadelphia

Thanks, are there usually dart frogs or terrarium supplies there ?

jbeetle Oct 02, 2003 08:05 PM

last year they had a bunch of darts. i got some luecs and mint terribilis there. they mainly had tincs, auratus, azureus, and the other staples. they also had FF and some terrarium stuff (not a ton, but some). i am hoping that it will be even better this year, as it is the second time they are having it and they had a pretty good turn out last time... so hopefully more vendors will come this year.

as far as frogs in the philly area there you have frazer as was mentioned. there was gary chamberlain in philly area but what he told me was he got out of them to raise his child/children at the moment. there also is this oct 18-19 at hamburg a reptile show. you might run into gary chamberlain there if he has any frogs there. also mike shrom from ephrata is always there at hamburg. i have bought a few of my frogs off of him. he pretty much does the shows in the pa/md area. also you can take a trip to the new cabellas store in the are. the store in easton is called the nature nook. at the moment he has two darts left, an oyapak and a powder blue. he sold most of his frogs in the last 2 weeks.but he will be getting some hopfully soon.
hope this info helps.

I have been to both and they are pretty good. The nature nook is a really nice place and they are one of the few pet shops that is really responsible. They have great animals, but you are gonna pay for them. They are pricey, but fair. The frazier zoo is ok, but they get their frogs mostly from local people. You never know if you are getting a mutt. Im gonna be upgrading to a larger tank and will need additional inhabitants, so if you guys breed, let me know.
