GE Sunshine bulb in the orange box...

dvknight Oct 02, 2003 11:24 AM

In my short experience, I have found that shoplights, using an equal combination of GE Sunshine in the orange box and the Plants and Aquariums bulb give an extraordinary amount of plant growth, as one bulb represents the blue/green end of the spectrum, the other the reds. Also, this combination is very visually appealling, more natural, if you will, than just using 1 set of colours. My opinion.

Anyways, a little while ago, someone posted that GE markets the Sunshine bulb as a cheaper industrial bulb, for a 1/4 of the price. I think it's called Chroma 50/50? I can't find the post, and searching the forums since the changeover was done is impossible. Please let me know what the bulb is called, so I can no longer be taken for a fool!

Dave,
Sunshine bulb is the GE Chroma 50 (GE F40C50). As I understaand it they discontinued it as Chroma 50 and only market in the orange box now. Phillips markets an identical light(5000K, 92 CRI) as Philips Colortone 50 (F40C50) and runs a bit cheaper.

I use a sunshine bulb on my imitator tank, and on the bulb it says chroma 50, so my guess is that it is the same. I guess they used to make chroma 70's, but I have not see them anywhere.

How much are these bulbs? With dart frogs I used to get the shop lights from Home Depot and the $1 bulbs to go with them. Now I'm looking for a little better lights for Phelsuma, so I'm curious.
Best,
Justin

I think they are $7 each. I bought 18" ones and they were $5 at wallmart.

About the best I've seen for 48" 40 Watt T12's is $4.00. $1.50 would be awesome.

$1.50 if you can find a good commercial supplier in the local area. If not I've picked them up at homedepot for around $3 I believe. Either way it is better then paying $4 for the bulb and $4 for the orange sleave to go with it.

guess I should answer the original question.
48inches. the only economical size. If you aren't using these you minds well buy PCs (which is actually what I use, only my plants and bugs use chroma 50s).

Also I should mention that at $1.50/tube, you have to buy a whole box. No prob for us plant freaks but if you just have a few frogs this may be overkill.
