Adult Overweight?

ReneeValois Nov 03, 2011 08:43 PM

I see conflicting recommendations for the ideal weight of an adult rainbow boa. One source said adults don't usually weigh more than 5-7 pounds. My adult male is 6 pounds (I feed him a medium rat every 2 to 3 weeks.) Is his weight okay or is he overweight? Should I feed him less frequently? Thanks for your advice!

....It depends on how long he is. 6 pounds is big for a male but is okay if he is more than 6 feet long. How old is he?

He's between 4.5 and 5 years old. I'm not sure if he's over 6 feet--I haven't tried to measure him in awhile (I've always found that difficult given his propensity to coil up). If he's just 6 feet, what would be the recommended weight? Thanks!!!

Renee,
....In the wild most six footers would probably weigh from 3 to 4.5 pounds with a few heavier than that. Most of us do keep them heavier than they would be in the wild. We really do not know what is the right and most healthy weight for them but I would guess that at 6 feet they are probably healthiest at around 5 pounds. If yours is just 3 or 4 inches over 6 feet then 6 pounds is probably fine. I do try to keep my males a little thinner than the females because they seem to be better breeders if not too heavy.

Thanks, Jeff. Maybe I'll just feed him once a month for awhile to see if I can get his weight down a little. I really appreciate your advice!
