what is too old for a female to lay eggs

mistysprouse Nov 04, 2011 02:20 AM

Just a random question on how old is too old for a female to lay eggs?

I have one female that is approx 20 years and weighs over 8 lbs easy. She laid 12 eggs for me a number of years ago but I haven't really been breeding her since. She is a normal and I have been using hets instead for my breeding project.

I inquired at a reptile store if they would be interested in her and they said she was too old to lay eggs.

Just wondered what some of you thought since not everyone working at a reptile store knows what they are talking about all the time.

I have one around that age that still breeds and has viable eggs.
I would suspect that as long as she is healthy and produces follicles she is able to breed. I would probably not breed her every year maybe to much but i see no problem with every other. maybe others will have some input.

As usual, the "PetSmart Dude" doesn't know diddly crap! I had a 21 yr old lay a viable clutch this year! The Philly Zoo had a 44 yr. old before and I think I read it layed eggs in it's late 20's!

Agree. When he said that I figured it was crap but then I did get to thinking that I didn't really know the answer so I should check into it.

if the female is dead...it is not a good idea to try and get eggs from it...

other than that....it's fair game....

if it works it works...

and the answer you want is double the 20 you got in her ...

....40 to 50....
