Geez...where'd everybody go?

mbrawley Nov 04, 2011 05:19 PM

I see that things have really gone down hill around here, since I've been gone. I figured since I had a few minutes I would try to help out and get things going again with some nice Floridana pics. I'm sure many of the viewers here are starved to see some REAL kingsnakes...John Lassiter. LOL!

So anyway, some of you may remember a pic I posted several months ago, of a single baby Florida I hatched out of a clutch of 4. The other three eggs were infertile. The pairing was a 007 Line (pos het Snow) PB male, crossed with a presumably norm female Brooksi. Now it seems, the female was likely het for PB, because the sole surviving baby came out something other than “norm”, however, not your “typical” PB.

Here’s the parents, and the baby female...

Here she is about 3 months later...

I did the same pairing again, for a double clutch of 3 viable eggs the second time around. All 3 hatched on 10/06/2011. This time I produced two more visuals (a 1.1), and a het male.

I also paired the same male PB up with another “norm” female and ended up with a clutch of 8 babies, that hatched out on 10/27/2011. These were all norm het PB’s, with nothing remarkable about them.

Unfortunately all my adults, including the parents to these babies, are freakin dead now cuz of the freakin fire, so I won’t have her anymore to try and figure out, but at least I have these babies to work with – which I thank the Lord for. As I said, these babies are not typical looking PB's. If had some more reg PB's (which I don't because they're all freakin dead now, lol!) I would post a picture of them for comparison, for those who aren't familiar. Since these babies resemble Golden PB's more than anything, IMO, that's what I'm going with for now.

What I can say with certainty, is the father was NOT hypo; he was a visual PB, but was pos het for lav & Anery, but since he's freakin dead now, I may never know for sure.

Very cool looking hatchlings but they look like regular hypos to me. judging by your ratios the parents could have been het for hypo. That is the problem with mixing many mutations and having triple hets etc... nobody keeps track of what's in the stew and then you think you have something cool and its just the result of a forgotten recessive mutation in the mix like Hypomelanism. Maybe of course this is something new but with that many recessive mutations in there it seems unlikely that it is something new(Occam's razor). Either way it will be fun to mess around with and see what you can come up with.

Lu

CBI Nov 05, 2011 02:07 PM

Lu,

I sent Micah the male that he used (A 007 PB) and there is no hypo in there... that's why he thinks that he may have something new. 007 had PB / anery / and lav and myself and Rainer have produced MANY 007 clutches (him way more than I) and not one hypo has popped out. The female could be het for who knows what, I agree on that, but that PB male did not have any hypo in him....

Just wanted to clear that up

Didn't the PB line come out of the hypo line? If it did the hypo gene could still be floating in there. I dont follow the different things you guys mix around. I may be wrong. Maybe you could clear that up for me.

mbrawley Nov 05, 2011 04:53 PM

I'd say you're half right. Although PB is a recessive gene, and similar to other hypos in visual appearance, it is completely unique from the other garden variety hypos, in the way it acts with the TNeg (true) alb gene. It is allelic with the T neg, and so when combined with the TNeg, it produces a visual, double homozygot in the first generation - the "Jelly". It's almost a type of co-dom, however only works this way with the TNeg. Breedings between PB to other recessive traits like lavender (Tpos) albino, axanthic, anery, whitesided and hypo, do not NOT prove to be codominant, and therefore produce hets in the first generation.

Even though you probably know most of this, I hope it helps a little anyway.

Oh, and one more thing, although I personally do know all of this myself, I think it's only fair to say I plagerized the hell out of what I wrote by stealing it off of Rainer's website. He gives the simplest explanation, and it was easy to copy and paste...so thanks Rainer.
BTW, the picture I posted of the baby turtle was for your viewing pleasure.

CBI Nov 05, 2011 05:16 PM

Lol yea we mix around a ton of stuff, who knows what's what. All my normals are poss het for 11 different traits and i just try and bank on putting the right ones together... idk how I hatch out double and triple visuals... 1/16 and 1/64 odds... damn I get real lucky huh? Or maybe there are just so many unknown hets because who knows whats in what that that alone allows me to produce what I have so far...

Lu

CBI Nov 05, 2011 05:14 PM

That's true, but myself and Rainer have been working with this line for years now, hundreds of eggs, and not one hypo. No Hybino, No Anery Ghosts, No Hypo PBs, nothing hypo at all. There is no way that his male had hypo in it. Micah's PB came from 100% 007 parents (a Phantom het lav x triple het) and there is no hypo in those. I even took that Phantom male and bread it to a hypo in order to make triple hets this season and not one hypo... all normals.

GONE FISHING!!!

DMong Nov 05, 2011 08:00 PM

I talked directly to Steve Strasser on the phone several months ago since I knew he was directly involved with their origin. I posted this a while back for Jorge when he asked about it several months ago.

Peanut butter brooksi history (as told to me by Steve Strasser) on 6/18/11

I talked directly to my long-time friend Steve Strasser today, and he told me the precise history on the peanut butters. In short, Steve's friend, Tom Mills of California told Steve that while he was down that way visiting Steve in Florida, he wanted to go to Glades Herp to check things out. So they went there and picked out a couple of brooksi they had. Tom took them home and later inadvertently produced the very FIRST peanut butters that descended from these normal wild-caught snakes that originated from Miami/Dade county that Glades had. Tom accidentally produced two odd looking snakes (peanut butters), one of which died, then the following year produced another two, and one of THOSE also died as well. So it just so happened that this left one sexual pair.

After these odd looking snakes were produced by Tom, Steve tried to keep this "hush-hush" and got back with Bill Love(then of Glades Herp), and tried to locate more original animals with these same code numbers that the one's Tom originally bought from them, but this didn't pan out, so Steve let the "cat out of the bag" so to speak and told Bill About these odd snakes that Tom produced. Bill thought that from the code numbers Steve told him, these were likely the hypos he just recently produced, but they were not because the "xx" prefix meant those also were wild-caught animals of unknown ages. Soon afterwards, Tom later gave all of this group back to his friend Steve Strasser, and Steve produced some more along with hets in the following years, which is where Rainer got his from.

the story is more complicated than that. But for simplicity sake. I got a hold of the founding stock and popularized them.

Steve sold me all his animals including his founding stock Peanut butters. A couple of those adults i later returned back to him .
