What the heck!!!??? I can not find a shipper!!!! HELP!!!

darkhorseherps Oct 02, 2003 11:38 AM

This is ridiculas! I have just got off the phone with FEDEX, AIRBORNE EX and UPS and ALL of them say the same thing "we don't take ANY LIVE ANIMALS of any kind" is this true or do these clerks not know what they are talking about. I know people selling on the internet that say they ship Fedex or UPS so how are they doing it? I will not mislable a box and take the chance of getting into big trouble plus the death of my baby bearded dragon on top of it. I can't get to the airport so Delta Dash won't work. Airborne express says they don't take insects yet I get a cricket shipment via Airborne every week. What the heck is going on...I am so frustrated!!!

I had the same problem with UPS for 2 consecutive shippings. They seem like they know what they're talking about, but I called the main UPS # and asked for the conditions of live animal shipment (which for them to say they don't ship them is a lie!!! Many people eveyday use UPS). The local clerks still told me they didn't accept them, which they do reserve the right to refuse shipment for any reason, still it is a lie to say they don't accept them period. What I did at that point was call to have UPS pick it up at my door anyway, the drivers don't seem to care. Have the box labeled, if they say no, they say no. No cost for you, just try it, it's worked for me both times, yet even when I tell the locals that I've shipped UPS before, they still say they do not accept them...I know your frustration, just get around the jerks and you'll be fine.

Well thats it! Airborne is no, USPS refused, Fedex is no AND now UPS says No Way....they will only take shipments from big companies like PetSmart, not from individuals. AND I even drove all the way to their stupid UPS hub to ask because they don't have a number you can call other than the stupid 1-800 number where the clerks REALLY don't know anything anyway. Thats it for me. I give up.

Where are you located? I'm assuming you tried to have the shipper pick it up, correct?
Sorry about your luck, I just know it worked for me. It really sucks that there is this much grief over trying to ship a small, harmless reptile to someone.

Try using the united states postal service. They are quick, cheap and they accept shipments of live lizards. UPS also is supposed to accept shipments of lizards. FedEx is a definite no. Airborne used to ship lizards but its hard to say whats going to happen now that they are being purchased by DHL.

-UPS does ship live harmless reptiles. I get stuff all the time from them.
-Air borne does ship live harmless reptiles.
-Fedex only ships fish, but I ship Fedex all the time the box is just labeled as fish
-USPS does ship lizards, but have heard horror stories about missing shipments.

ARGH!!!! UPS in this area will not ship the reptiles even though their policy states they will. It is up to the individual UPS hub whether or not they will. All the places I have called so far say NO WAY. This is such BS! I have to make a special trip all the way out to the hub just to beg them to take the lizards, then come all the way home and package them up with the heat pack, and then take a chance that whoever is at the desk when I get back there will agree to take them. And I would NOT recommend shipping stuff that is mislabled. You can get in so much trouble if you are caught doing that. And I know from experience at MY local USPS place that they will throw the box against the wall the minute I am out the door. The posties here hate everyone and everything. I give up!

If you have an approved account with UPS to ship reptiles they will take them. Some of the local hubs do not know that the company ships them and if you do have the approved account and the local hub won't take them all you have to do is call the main number from their office or have their local manager call the main number and they will tell them that they DO ship them.

Does it cost extra to get an official account with UPS? When I went to the hub, the guy there told me in 26 years of working there he has never shipped reptiles and he had to call someone to tell him the policy. THEN he says that they ONLY ship reptiles from places like PetSmart. NO over the counter drop offs either. Its a conspiracy to ruin the reptile market..haha.
